Liege-Bastogne-Liege – La Doyenne – returns to our screens this Sunday for its 101st edition. The race will again enjoy a stellar start list, with Fleche Wallonne winner Alejandro Valverde (Movistar), reigning World Champion Michal Kwiatkowski (Etixx-Quickstep) and 2013 winner Dan Martin (Cannondale-Garmin) just some of the big names slated to ride. No man will likely be keener to conquer La Doyenne than Irishman Martin, who fell on the final corner of last year’s race when perfectly poised to surge for victory.
The route starts with a fairly gentle meander from the Belgian industrial town of Liege to Bastogne, before returning to Liege via a considerably hillier route. This year’s edition has also been spiced up a little, with the inclusion of two new climbs and a reduced respite between La Redoute and the Côte de la Roche-aux-Faucons. As ever, the race will finish with the 1 kilometer slog up the Côte de Saint Nicolas‘ 11.1% gradient.
NBC will be showing highlights of the race on TV at midnight Eastern on Wednesday 29th April, while viewers in the UK can catch live TV coverage via British Eurosport from 1:15pm BST, with highlights on British Eurosport 2 at 10pm BST.
