Jeff Hawkins is an award-winning sportswriter with more than five decades in the industry, in both print and digital media. Hawkins spent his early career as a sportswriter for various newspapers in Michigan, North Carolina, Florida, Upstate New York and IIllinois. He is also the author of four youth sports books.
Hawkins earned journalism degrees from Ferris State University (1990) and Oakland University (1993). Over the course of his career, Hawkins earned several sports writing awards, including two national honors from the Associated Press Sports Editors (APSE) for column writing and news reporting.
Hawkins counts the late Shelby Strother (Detroit News columnist) and Mitch Albom (Detroit Free Press columnist) as his top influences. Away from the laptop, the Heavy contributor enjoys mountain biking, live eclectic music and classic movies.
