A week after a frustrated Christopher Bell engaged in a rare team radio outburst, the NASCAR Cup Series playoff driver thanked the Joe Gibbs Racing team for helping him get back to Victory Lane.
Following the middle Round of 16 event at World Wide Technology Raceway, Bell screamed at Adam Stevens, his crew chief since 2021. The two spoke a few days after the incident. Fences were mended. Bell’s victory at Bristol Motor Speedway on Sunday displayed few lingering grudges.
Overcoming tire issues, Bell captured his first points race since Phoenix on March 9.
“I got really frustrated last week because we had an opportunity to win and we didn’t win,” Bell said, as reported by NASCAR.com. “We’ve had several opportunities to win throughout the summer and we didn’t win.
“Every week, every week we can do it. And Adam, while I was frustrated with the calls last week, he nailed every call this week, and we ended up in Victory Lane. You’re going to have that. Tonight was just a perfect example of everybody doing the right things and not making mistakes and keeping us in it. We got the fruit of that.”
Stevens established a different tone after Bell earned the Bass Pro Shops Night Race title.
“Way to never give up despite a little adversity this year in these playoffs,” Stevens said on the team’s radio. “Proud of you, Bell.”
Entering Sunday’s Round of 12 opener at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, Bell ranks No. 4 in the playoff standings, 20 points above the cutoff line.
Denny Hamlin ranks first with 26 points, while a group of Austin Cindric (-1), Joey Logano (-2), Ross Chastain (-2) and Tyler Reddick (-3) sit below No. 8-ranked Bubba Wallace.
