Korean Zombie improves to 3-0 in UFC

Chan Sung Jung‘s remarkable run in the UFC continued on Tuesday night, perhaps with the most impressive performance of his career.

“The Korean Zombie” improved to 3-0 in the UFC with an upset win over Dustin Poirier in the main event of UFC on Fuel TV: Korean Zombie vs. Poirier at the Patriot Center in Fairfax, Va. Jung went hard and heavy against Poirier through three rounds, landing some big shots that floored his opponent on multiple occasions before putting the finishing touches on “The Diamond” early in the fourth round, ending the fight with a D’Arce choke that put Poirier to sleep.

Jung picked up a pair of post-fight bonus awards for his performance. He won $40,000 for Submission of the Night and another $40,000 for Fight of the Night. Those two bonuses gave him five bonus awards in five Zuffa fights.

Jung started his Zuffa career 0-2 in the WEC in 2010. But his UFC run has been all highlight reels so far. In March 2011, his twister submission of Leonard Garcia was the consensus Submission of the Year in MMA. He followed that up with a seven-second knockout of recent featherweight title challenger Mark Hominick at UFC 140. And his win over Poirier moved him to 3-0 and upset Poirier’s hope to get the next shot at the 145-pound belt.

That shot may now go to Jung after champion Jose Aldo settles up with Erik Koch at UFC 149 in July. It’s an opportunity Jung wants, telling Jon Anik after the fight, in English, “I want Jose Aldo.”

In the co-main event, “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 7 winner Amir Sadollah picked up a split decision win over Jorge Lopez. And Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone outpointed Jeremy Stephens, using a concerted kickboxing attack to get back on track after a loss to Nate Diaz in December.

The main card’s other big highlight opened the show on Fuel TV when Tom Lawlor knocked out Jason MacDonald just 50 seconds into the first round. The win earned him the Knockout of the Night bonus – on his 29th birthday.
