Following UFC 125 Draw, Edgar vs. Maynard III On Tap

Maynard
After fighting to a split draw at UFC 125, lightweight champion Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard will face off for a third time.

The news comes shortly after it was announced that WEC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis would face off with the champion to unify the belt next. UFC President Dana White  informed Yahoo! Sports’ Kevin Iole of the change following the event.

Maynard, who is the lone man to defeat Edgar, has had a long road to the lightweight title and nearly walked away with it last Saturday. However, after nearly finishing Edgar multiple times in the opening frame, Maynard slowed down, while his opponent just kept regaining momentum. Edgar’s resilience allowed him to keep his title after the judges turned in a split draw on the scorecards.

While Maynard and Edgar will meet for a third time, WEC champion Pettis must wait before unifying his title with the winner. Pettis earned his belt against Benson Henderson at WEC 53, the promotion’s final event, and was cageside at UFC 125 to see who he would face next. In all likelihood, he will be out of action until the rematch, as opposed to receiving a new opponent.
