“Mounting evidence” may link Boston bombing suspects Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev to a triple murder that killed Tamerlan’s best friend in 2011, reports ABC.

Brendan Mess, described as Tamerlan’s “only American friend,” was one of three victims found with their throats slit on September 12, 2011, at an apartment in Waltham, Massachusetts. Their dead bodies were covered in marijuana.

Tamerlan was never a suspect until after the Boston bombings, which drew new attention to the unsolved slayings. In the days after the terror attack, there was intense speculation among acquaintances that Tamerlan, who was killed in a shootout on April 19, four days after the bombing, was likely involved in the 2011 bloodbath.

But there was no mention of young Dzhokhar’s possible involvement until today.
