Boston College inked head coach Steve Addazio to a contract extension Thursday which will keep him on the Eagles sideline through the 2020 season.

“In just two years, Steve Addazio has done an amazing job with our football program,” Athletics Director Brad Bates said in a release.

Addazio is a 28-year coaching veteran who got his start at Western Connecticut State (offensive line 1985-87). He then became a very successful head coach at Cheshire (Conn.) High School from 1988-94 before joining big-time college football.

Here’s what you need to know about Addazio:

Addazio has only been with Boston College for two seasons, but showed school officials enough to warrant an extension.

“Beyond winning, he has worked tirelessly to recruit top-notch student-athletes and develop lasting relationships with former players and the entire University community. He is one of the best motivators I’ve ever been around, and his enthusiasm is infectious. We are very fortunate to have him as our coach,” Bates added.

Boston College is a private institution, therefore it is not required to disclose salaries of its employees. Only a handful or so FBS schools are private.

2. Addazio Has Been With B.C. For 2 Seasons

Addazio is 14-11 overall, going 4-4 in the conference each season. The Eagles went 7-6 in 2013, including a 42-19 loss to Arizona in the AdvoCare V100 Bowl. This season B.C. is 7-5 with a Pinstripe Bowl matchup against Penn State next.

This season, the Eagles were picked in the preseason to finish 6th in the ACC Atlantic. They finished 4th. In 2013, they were picked to finish last and they tied for 3rd.

Addazio’s son, Louie, is a senior tight end for Boston College.

3. Addazio Came to B.C. From Temple

Addazio spent 2 seasons – 2011 and 2012 – at Temple, his first collegiate head coaching job.

2011 9-4 overall, 5-3 Mid-American
2012 4-7 overall, 2-5 Big East

Addazio led Temple to its first bowl win in 32 seasons when the Owls beat Wyoming 37-15 in the New Mexico Bowl following the 2011 year.

4. Addazio Was Tim Tebow’s Offensive Coordinator at Florida

Addazio was on Urban Meyer’s Florida staff from 2005-10, serving as the offensive coordinator the final 2 seasons, including former Heisman winner Tim Tebow’s senior campaign.

That year, Tebow threw for 2,895 and 21 touchdowns with a 70.1 completion percentage, and rushed for a career-high 910 yards and 14 more scores.

Addazio joined the staff as the offensive line/tight ends coach for 2 seasons, then added assistant head coach to his title for the 2007-08 years.

Addazio also had coaching stints at Syracuse (1995-98), Notre Dame (1999-2001) and Indiana (2002-04).

5. Addazio Had Been Rumored For High-Profile Head Coaching Jobs

Despite only 4 seasons as a college head coach, Addazio’s name always seems to be popping up for other high-profile jobs. Having success with teams which aren’t supposed to win will do that.

Most recently he had been linked to the Michigan and Florida jobs.

Florida hired Jim McElwain away from Colorado State 2 weeks ago to replace Will Muschamp, who recently accepted the Auburn defensive coordinator position.

Michigan is still searching for its next coach after firing Brady Hoke earlier this month. The Wolverines have offered Jim Harbaugh a 6-year deal, but the current 49ers coach has been mum on the subject.

“As you know, I only talk about the job that I have,” Harbaugh said in his news conference Thursday. “Been together a long time. It’s a long-standing policy.”
