WATCH: Dee Gordon Cries for Jose Fernandez After Hitting Lead-Off Home Run

Second baseman Dee Gordon, who wore an “R.I.P.” shirt during batting practice before the Miami Marlins first game after Jose Fernandez’s shocking death Sunday morning, hit a lead-off home run against the New York Mets. As he went into the dugout, it looked like Gordon cried as his teammates embraced him. Moments before, the Marlins paid tribute to Fernandez and had his number 16 written on the mound.

Fernandez was just 24 years old and died Sunday morning in a boating accident, along with two other people.

Gordon was also mimicking Fernandez’s batting stance when he hit the home run, which was his first of the season. Every member of the Marlins are wearing number 16 in Fernandez’s memory and plan to wear a patch for the rest of the season.

“He loved to hit as much as he loved to pitch,” Gordon told Yahoo Sports. “I thought that was just my way of showing him that, ‘I love you. I miss you. I’m always going to miss you.’”

In an interview with the Miami Herald after the game, Gordon said he couldn’t remember rounding the bases. “It took forever. It seemed like it took forever,” he said.

Before the game, Gordon was seen wearing a shirt that read “R.I.P.,” with the “I” replaced by a picture of Fernandez.

Gordon also posted several images on Instagram. In one message, he wrote:

My brother.

You were family to me…my heart is hurting wishing you would just burst through the clubhouse doors any second now late like always laughing telling me how many red and yellow snapper you caught last night…you were always happy and kept the biggest smile on your face…you may have rubbed people who didn’t get to know you the wrong way at times but I always had your back no matter what and didn’t never let you get in any of those brawls…last Sunday when you came to chapel with me is crazy now bc you said you needed to go…you just told me that your last game was “the best game I ever pitched in my life” and it was your last…I don’t know if God was calling you last Sunday and made you decide to come to chapel or helped you pitch your best game but I do know I love you and I’m so hurt to see my brother go…I know I’m being selfish but you weren’t just a teammate to me…you were family…I love you Josey!!! Long Live YOU FOREVER!!!! Rest In Peace my brother I hope you and God catch the biggest fish heaven has to offer. #JDF16FOREVER

In another message on Monday, Gordon wrote, alongside a picture of Fernandez smiling:

Today gonna be tough…I can still hear your voice…I remember our last conversations…I thank God I woke up this morning but I wish you could as well Josey…you and I shared a passion for this game that a lot of people don’t have or don’t understand and that’s why we got each other…I miss you bro…but I know you up there with Our Lord and savior…Love you bro and I’m gonna go harder everyday just for you! #JDF16FOREVER

After the game, the Marlins announced that no player for the team will ever wear No. 16 again.
