New York Yankees Announce Roster Decision With Former MLB All-Star

On Saturday, the New York Yankees lost to the Detroit Tigers by a score of 3-1 in their most recent spring training game.

The Yankees will have three more exhibition games before their Opening Day battle with the San Francisco Giants on March 25.

On Saturday, the Yankees announced a series of roster moves.

One of those decisions involved former MLB All-Star Paul DeJong.

The Yankees wrote: “Prior to today’s game, the Yankees made the following roster moves: • Reassigned INF Paul DeJong and INF/OF Seth Brown to minor league camp. • Optioned INF/OF Oswaldo Cabrera and INF Max Schuemann to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.”

DeJong is coming off a season where he appeared in 57 games for the Washington Nationals.

He batted .228 with six home runs, 23 RBI’s and 18 runs.

The 32-year-old had signed with the Yankees in January.

Bob Nightengale of USA Today wrote (on January 4): “The Yankees sign veteran infielder Paul DeJong to a minor league contract with a spring training invite. He’ll earn $1 million if he makes the team.”

DeJong’s MLB Career

DeJong has played nine seasons for the St. Louis Cardinals, Chicago White Sox, Kansas City Royals, San Francisco Giants and Toronto Blue Jays (in addition to the Nationals).

He is most known for his time with the Cardinals where he made the 2019 All-Star Game.

Over 925 career games, DeJong is batting .229 with 146 home runs, 423 RBI’s and 413 runs.

Joel Sherman of The New York Post wrote (on March 18): “Source: Paul DeJong does not plan to opt out of his minor league deal with the Yankees tomorrow (Thursday) as is his right as XX(b) free agent. His plan is to try to make the team and, if not, at least begin the season at AAA.”

The Yankees are coming off a year where lost to the Toronto Blue Jays in the ALDS.
