1. McIntyre Was a Pro Boxer That Fought Butterbean
McIntyre was a professional boxer from 1994 to 2007, fighting 21 times as a pro. He as a record of 7-14 with 2 knockouts.
One of his more notable fights and losses went the distance (four rounds) against Eric “Butterbean” Esch.
2. McIntyre Has Known Crawford His Whole Life
McIntyre and Crawford’s relationship was on full display during the Netflix series “Countdown: Canelo vs. Crawford,” which aired during the lead up to Saturday’s fight.
McIntyre, 55, grew up on the same street as Crawford, 37, in Omaha, Nebraska, and has known the three-division champion his entire life. The two trained at the same gym, and McIntyre soon recognized Crawford’s talent, eventually taking him under his wing. But men worked under the tutelage of local legend Midge Minor first.
“I guess you could say I’ve been something like a big brother, a big cousin, an uncle to Terence… when you’re in the gym all the time with the kids, you develop relationships,” McIntyre said of Crawford in a 2020 interview with The Athletic.
“When we were done for the day, the trainer would always say, ‘Why don’t you stay around and help with the kids?’ So I’d hold the pads, push them a little bit. I started doing a little training.”
3. McIntyre Was Arrested in U.K. in 2023 for Gun Possession
On September 2, 2023, McIntyre was arrested at Manchester Airport after security discovered a firearm and ammunition in his luggage. The 53-year-old was detained in the airport by armed police.
Just hours earlier, McIntyre had been in the spotlight as chief second for Chris Eubank Jr., guiding him to an emphatic 10th-round stoppage of Liam Smith at the AO Arena. It was McIntyre’s first time working with Eubank, and his performance in the corner drew widespread praise. The arrest, however, cast a shadow over his career, as the U.K. enforces strict gun laws, with a mandatory minimum sentence of five years for firearm possession unless exceptional circumstances apply.
At a sentencing hearing on October 9, 2023, McIntyre avoided prison after being handed a 20-month suspended sentence, allowing him to return home to the U.S. British media reported that the judge departed from the statutory five-year term due to mitigating factors and compelling character testimony, including in-person support from McIntyre’s star pupil, Crawford.

4. McIntyre Trains Other Great Boxers
Beyond Crawford and Eubank Jr., McIntyre has also trained former world champions Amir Khan, Jamel Herring, and Maurice Hooker. He currently works with rising lightweight contender Keyshawn Davis, a prospect widely regarded as a future superstar.
5. McIntyre Was Not Concerned About Alvarez’s Power Headed Into Megafight
McIntyre has been critical of Alvarez’s recent form, noting that his last seven fights have all gone the distance. Despite facing opponents such as Edgar Berlanga, Jaime Munguia, and John Ryder — each of whom was later stopped by other fighters — Alvarez has not scored a knockout since finishing Caleb Plant in 2021.
While many expect Alvarez’s power to overwhelm the smaller Crawford, BoMac insists it won’t be enough.
“Who gives a (expletive) about that power?” said McIntyre, according to Ring Magazine. “How do you beat power? Speed and timing. (Alvarez’s) power is not going to be able to be sustained throughout the fight. He usually slows down between rounds six and seven. When he slows down, that’s a wrap. That’s when he gets outboxed.”
