The Alabama Crimson Tide suffered an embarrassing 26-10 loss to the Tennessee Volunteers on Saturday afternoon, but the bad news didn’t end with the final whistle at Neyland Stadium.

ESPN’s updated Football Power Index (FPI) rankings have delivered another harsh reality check for Kalen DeBoer and his team, particularly when it comes to Alabama’s chances of reaching the College Football Playoff.

After beginning the season with five consecutive victories, Alabama has now dropped back-to-back games against Georgia and Tennessee, falling to 5-2 overall and 3-2 in SEC play.

While the Crimson Tide remain among the nation’s highest-rated teams according to ESPN’s predictive model, one significant change in the latest projections should have Alabama fans extremely concerned.

And it has everything to do with the Crimson Tide’s postseason future.

Alabama’s College Football Playoff Chances Take Massive Hit in ESPN FPI

ESPN’s updated Football Power Index shows Alabama dropped one spot to No. 6 nationally after Saturday’s disappointing performance against Tennessee.

However, the Crimson Tide’s relatively minor movement in the overall rankings doesn’t tell the entire story.

The biggest development involves Alabama’s probability of reaching the College Football Playoff.

Entering Saturday’s rivalry matchup, ESPN’s FPI gave the Crimson Tide an 82.4% chance of making the College Football Playoff.

Following the loss to Tennessee, that number has plummeted to just 49.4%.

That’s a staggering decline of 33 percentage points following a single game.

Here is a closer look at Alabama’s updated postseason outlook:

  • National FPI ranking: No. 6
  • Previous FPI ranking: No. 5
  • Previous playoff probability: 82.4%
  • Updated playoff probability: 49.4%
  • Change in playoff probability: Down 33 percentage points
  • National ranking in playoff probability: No. 8

Despite the significant decline, Alabama still possesses the eighth-highest playoff probability in the country.

Among SEC programs, only Georgia has a higher projected chance of reaching the postseason, with the Bulldogs sitting at 78.1%.

Nevertheless, the latest projections demonstrate just how quickly Alabama’s promising season has taken a troubling turn.

ESPN FPI Still Views Alabama as One of College Football’s Best Teams

Perhaps the most interesting takeaway from ESPN’s updated rankings is that the predictive model hasn’t completely abandoned Alabama.

Despite consecutive losses, the Crimson Tide remain No. 6 nationally, ahead of several programs with better records.

The updated FPI top 10 includes:

  1. Ohio State
  2. Notre Dame
  3. Georgia
  4. Miami
  5. Indiana
  6. Alabama
  7. Texas
  8. LSU
  9. Texas Tech
  10. Oregon

Tennessee, meanwhile, checks in at No. 12 following its convincing victory over Alabama.

It’s important to understand that ESPN’s FPI isn’t designed to function like the AP Top 25 or the College Football Playoff selection committee’s rankings.

Instead, the system attempts to measure a team’s overall strength and predict future performance.

That distinction explains why Alabama remains highly regarded despite its recent struggles.

However, being viewed as one of the country’s most talented teams means very little if the Crimson Tide cannot translate that talent into victories.

And Saturday’s performance against Tennessee raised serious questions about Alabama’s ability to do exactly that.

Alabama’s Offensive Struggles Becoming Impossible to Ignore

Alabama’s latest defeat wasn’t simply the result of a few unfortunate breaks or questionable officiating decisions.

The Crimson Tide were thoroughly outplayed by Tennessee, particularly on the offensive side of the ball.

Alabama managed just 201 total yards while committing four turnovers against the Volunteers.

Quarterback Keelon Russell completed 19 of 29 passes for 147 yards and two interceptions as the Crimson Tide struggled to establish any consistent offensive rhythm.

For an offense featuring Russell and several talented playmakers, that level of production is unacceptable.

Offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb must find a way to create more favorable situations for his young quarterback while establishing some semblance of balance in the running game.

Defensive coordinator Kane Wommack also has questions to answer after Tennessee running back DeSean Bishop rushed for 159 yards and two touchdowns.

Ultimately, the responsibility falls on DeBoer to get Alabama playing at a championship-caliber level again.

The Crimson Tide have now lost consecutive regular-season games for the first time since 2007, an alarming development for a program accustomed to competing for championships.

Alabama’s College Football Playoff Hopes Are Still Alive, but Margin for Error Is Gone

Despite the disappointing projections, Alabama’s season is far from over.

The Crimson Tide still has opportunities to strengthen their postseason résumé, beginning with an important home matchup against Texas A&M on October 24.

However, the remaining schedule offers little room for another disappointing performance.

Alabama must also navigate challenging SEC matchups against LSU and Auburn before the regular season concludes.

Winning out would put the Crimson Tide in a much stronger position to earn a College Football Playoff invitation, although postseason selection would still depend on results elsewhere around the country.

Another loss, meanwhile, could make Alabama’s path considerably more difficult.

For DeBoer and his team, the message from ESPN’s latest FPI projections is unmistakable.

The Crimson Tide still have enough talent to compete with the nation’s best programs, but their postseason aspirations are no longer nearly as secure as they appeared just two weeks ago.

Alabama’s playoff chances have fallen from better than four in five to essentially a coin flip.

And unless the Crimson Tide make significant improvements over the coming weeks, the program could find itself on the outside looking in when the College Football Playoff field is announced.
