Alabama football may have another versatile defensive weapon developing in its freshman class.
Five-star linebacker Xavier Griffin has continued to impress during his first preseason camp in Tuscaloosa, and Alabama outside linebackers coach Christian Robinson believes the freshman has the skill set to make an impact in multiple ways.
Griffin arrived at Alabama as one of the nation’s top prospects in the 2026 recruiting class. The Gainesville, Georgia, product was ranked as the No. 1 linebacker in the country by 247Sports, and the Crimson Tide clearly had a vision for how they could maximize his versatility.
Now, that vision is beginning to take shape.
Alabama Sees Jihaad Campbell Traits in Xavier Griffin
While speaking with Yea Alabama, Robinson recently highlighted Griffin’s physical development and versatility, noting that the freshman has already added significant muscle since arriving in Tuscaloosa.
“He’s done a great job coming in. I think his physical growth has been huge for him. He was 205 in high school and put on 15 pounds of muscle after he arrived. That’s helped him. He’s moving all over for us. He probably has the most twitch of any of the edge guys in building.”
That athleticism could allow Alabama to move Griffin around the defense rather than limiting him to one position.
The Crimson Tide currently list Griffin as a linebacker, and the 6-foot-3 freshman is listed at 228 pounds on Alabama’s official roster.
Robinson also revealed why Griffin is wearing No. 11 — the same number previously worn by former Alabama linebacker Jihaad Campbell.
“He’s wearing Jihaad’s (Campbell) number for a reason. I think a lot of the similarities we saw in high school will carry over to how we use him here. He has a diverse skill set.”
That comparison is particularly intriguing because Campbell developed into one of Alabama’s most versatile defenders before moving on to the NFL.
Robinson said Alabama specifically painted that picture for Griffin during his recruitment.
“We painted the vision of him being like Jihaad when we recruited him in high school, and he’s going to have an opportunity to do a lot of the same things like him.”
That means Alabama isn’t simply hoping Griffin can become a productive linebacker. The Crimson Tide appear prepared to utilize his athleticism in different areas of the defense.
Head coach Kalen DeBoer previously made a similar comparison, saying Griffin could play linebacker while also moving to the edge to attack the quarterback.
For Alabama, that versatility could make Griffin one of the more intriguing freshmen to watch when the 2026 season begins.
The Crimson Tide already have established players at the position, including Yhonzae Pierre and Justin Hill, but Griffin’s ability to line up in multiple spots could create opportunities for him to get on the field early.
If Griffin continues developing at his current pace, Alabama may have found another defensive chess piece capable of making an impact well beyond his freshman season.
