Avoiding a messy trial and mounting legal fees, Duke and quarterback Darian Mensah reached a settlement that allowed both sides to move forward. Mensah is now committed to Miami, where he will play during the 2026 season.
Mensah entered the transfer portal just hours before it closed, with rumors quickly building that he was headed to South Florida. Duke, however, temporarily halted his plans by suing Mensah and securing a temporary restraining order that prevented him from enrolling elsewhere. The ruling still allowed Mensah to enter the portal, but he was unable to officially complete his transfer until a resolution was reached.
“Proud to have served as counsel in reaching a fair resolution between Darian Mensah and Duke University. I commend all parties for their professionalism throughout,” Mensah’s lawyer, Darren Heitner, posted.
Shortly after news of the settlement surfaced, Mensah and wide receiver Cooper Barkate — his top target at Duke — were shown on the University of Miami campus while touring the program. Not long after, both were seen at the South Beach restaurant Prime 112 alongside Hurricanes legend Edgerrin James and freshman standout Malachi Toney.
Both committed shortly after.
The additions only strengthen what could be an even more dangerous Miami roster, one that will be looking to respond after falling short to Indiana in the national championship game. And while the Hurricanes’ ultimate goal is a team accomplishment, Mensah could also find himself in the conversation for college football’s top individual award.
Darian Mensah Projected for Top College Football Award
With Mensah’s arrival, Miami has now landed three of the top transfer portal quarterbacks in the last three years, following Cam Ward and Carson Beck. Like the two who came before him, Mensah now has a chance to use Miami’s spotlight to elevate his national profile.
Ward became a Heisman finalist in one season. Beck led the Hurricanes to the national championship game in his lone season. Now, there’s growing belief Mensah could follow a similar path — or potentially surpass it.
“Darian Mensah is as skilled of a passer and great young man to talk to with a great story as you will find in college football,” ESPN insider Louis Riddick said. “2026 he will be on a very good team with a great program. Has Heisman Trophy potential written all over it.”
ESPN’s Eric Mac Lain said Miami should be viewed as a preseason No. 1 team. Sun Sentinel’s Adam Lichtenstein took it a step further, pointing to how close the program has already been.
“I don’t really disagree with this,” Lichtenstein said. “Entering last season, I thought they were legitimate playoff contenders. Entering the 2026 season, I think they’re legitimate title contenders.”
Darian Mensah Could Do What Cam Ward, Carson Beck Couldn’t
In Mario Cristobal’s fourth season back at his alma mater, he pushed Miami back into national relevance — using his transfer quarterback to do so.
With Ward, the Hurricanes came close to reaching the College Football Playoff behind one of the most productive offenses in school history. With Beck, Miami finished one win short of capturing its sixth national championship.
Now, there’s a growing belief Mensah could be the best of the trio — a quarterback with both the tools and the moment to deliver what Miami has been chasing.
If Mensah were to lead Miami to a national title while also winning the Heisman Trophy, he would become the first player in program history to accomplish both in the same season.
