Arch Manning had his best game of the season during Week 4 of college football, delivering a much-needed confidence boost. The No. 8 Texas Longhorns quarterback led his team to a 55-0 blowout victory over Sam Houston State, looking sharp in a performance fans had been waiting to see.

Manning missed on just three passes, completing 18 of 21 throws for 309 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran for 11 yards and added two more scores on the ground. The night marked a turning point after weeks of inconsistency and criticism, but it also featured an unusual moment of swagger that drew mixed reactions.

On a second-and-goal from the 5-yard line, Manning spun off linebacker Antavious Fish and powered into the end zone for his first rushing touchdown. As he crossed the goal line, he turned to stare down the Bearkats defender, flexing in celebration.

The gesture was striking for two reasons. First, it was completely out of character for Manning, who has built his reputation on being soft-spoken and humble. Second, it came against an opponent that posed little challenge.

Arch Manning Called Out For ‘Flex’

Manning’s first three games as Texas’ starter had been anything but smooth. Against Ohio State in the opener, he looked overwhelmed. He followed that with uneven performances against San Jose State and UTEP, throwing three interceptions across his first three games.

“I’ve got to play better,” Manning admitted after the UTEP game. “I’m just frustrated. I know I’m better than this. It’s going to be hard to sleep tonight.”

That frustration seemed to vanish against Sam Houston State, but the sudden burst of overconfidence created its own debate. Social media was quick to react to Manning’s flex, with critics and analysts split on how to digest it.

On3’s Ari Wasserman voiced what most were thinking.

“I’m so torn on Arch Manning flexing on that dude from Sam Houston State,” Wasserman said. “Manning has been through a lot these past few weeks and you can imagine he has a lot of bottled emotion to let out. Also, he is trying to find his swagger. He flexed on a future Progressive Insurance claims adjustor and it’s like, what.”

Texas, Arch Manning Now Begin SEC Play

While the flex drew attention, what matters most is whether Manning’s performance against Sam Houston State signals progress heading into SEC play. Texas enters its bye week at 3-1, having won three straight at home. The schedule now stiffens with a road trip to Gainesville to face the Florida Gators on October 4.

Florida may sit at 1-3, but the record is deceiving. The Gators’ defense has allowed just 16 points per game, and two of their losses came to top-five opponents in No. 3 LSU and No. 4 Miami. For Manning, the matchup in The Swamp will be his first career road start against an SEC team.

Manning has shown flashes of potential and glimpses of the confidence that could carry Texas through a difficult conference schedule. But to quiet critics and prove he’s more than just a name, he’ll need to have similar performances like he had against Sam Houston State.
