It goes without saying that, at the moment, the North Carolina football program under Bill Belichick is a complete and utter dumpster fire. With each passing week of Belichick’s tenure, the chaotic nature of the program becomes more bizarre.

Since the Tar Heels’ Week 6 blowout loss to Clemson, headlines have been stacked with disparaging reports of the next thing to go wrong inside the program—each one pointing directly back to Belichick.

Perhaps the latest, depending on when you’re reading this, is that North Carolina’s season-long documentary set to stream on Hulu has been abruptly canceled, according to Inside Carolina.

That’s likely not because it wouldn’t have been entertaining television. Quite the opposite, really.

UNC is sitting at 2-3, with its only wins coming against Group of Five opponents Charlotte and Richmond. Against Power Four competition, the Tar Heels have been blown out by a combined score of 120-33.

That’s just the disaster on the field. Off the field, more chaos is reportedly taking place—and that’s likely what Belichick doesn’t want to be seen.

UNC’s Football Program Labeled “Toxic Environment”

There’s a direct correlation between UNC’s on-field failures and its fractured locker room, according to WRAL’s Pat Welter.

“It’s an unstructured mess,” a source with first-hand knowledge of the program told WRAL. “There’s no culture, no organization. It’s a complete disaster.”

One example came after Belichick reportedly told staff not to acknowledge Drake Maye’s Sunday Night Football performance in a win over the Buffalo Bills, simply because he now plays for the New England Patriots. After backlash ensued, that was later amended. Regardless, that kind of behavior from leadership will no doubt teach destructive lessons to young players.

“It’s all starting at the top, and the boys are being affected,” a parent of a current UNC player said, speaking on condition of anonymity for fear of retaliation. “I don’t fault the players; I fault the leadership that created this toxic environment. There’s an individualistic mindset. The boys are young, and they are feeding into it.”

North Carolina Locker Room Divided, Coaches Questioned

The locker room is said to be filled with division, with certain players receiving special treatment, such as transfers Khmori House and Thaddeus Dixon, who followed Belichick’s son Steve—UNC’s defensive coordinator—from Washington.

“It started with recruits coming in acting entitled to certain things,” a source said. “It was about them individually, not the team. It was about me and what I was going to do.”

The coaching staff hasn’t helped. Parents describe a major lack of communication, a stark contrast to the approach of former head coach Mack Brown.

“There’s been no communication with coaches and parents, period,” a parent of a current UNC player said. “None, zero, zilch. Not one email from a coach, one text, phone call, nothing.”

General manager Michael Lombardi isn’t winning any popularity contests either. As one source put it to WRAL, “Nobody likes him.”

With seven games remaining, this may only be the beginning of the end for Belichick’s tenure at UNC. The university may soon be left to politely ask, “Hey, can you not come back. That would be great.” Both sides must know this has been a catastrophic disaster, and extending another year, much less four, would make things even worse.
