A Bit of History

The tournament currently known as the Cognizant Classic in the Palm Beaches was founded in 1972 as the Jackie Gleason’s Inverrary Classic. Major champion Tom Weiskopf won the inaugural event, one stroke ahead of the legendary Jack Nicklaus.

Nicklaus himself would later win this tournament twice (1977 and 1978). The list of winners includes Lee Trevino, Johnny Miller, Tom Kite, Fred Couples, Nick Price, Padraig Harrington, and Rory McIlroy, among others.

Nicklaus, Miller, and Harrington share the record for the most victories in this event with Mark Calcavecchia, with two each. Only the Golden Bear has achieved this feat in consecutive years.

The event’s 72-hole score record belongs to Justin Leonard, who scored 24-under 264 to win in 2003. The course record (59) was achieved by Jake Knapp during the first round of the 2025 edition.
