In a shocking turn of events in Major League Baseball, designated hitter Rafael Devers is no longer a part of the Boston Red Sox and will have to find a new home in the Bay Area with the San Francisco Giants. The trade came as a shock to most everyone who follows MLB, but as details continue to be revealed, it’s clear now that Devers felt unwanted, and told the front office to basically trade him if he’s not going to be treated with respect.

Devers had signed a massive contract at the beginning of last season that was worth north of $313 million. The Giants have already indicated they will take on the remaining value of that contract, so semi-good news for Red Sox fans.

Red Sox Legend David Ortiz Speaks Out

In the wake of the deal being done just moments before Sunday Night Baseball between the San Francisco Giants and the Los Angeles Dodgers, Boston Red Sox legend David Ortiz spoke out on the Devers news and delivered a blunt statement about Devers’ character.

Here is what he had to say, translated from Spanish:

“No one is indispensable on a team. The only way to become indispensable is by doing things the right way, all the way around. You need to be available. I think that marked the end of the relationship between the Red Sox and Devers. You have to be smart. A player’s worst enemy is his ego. And guess what teams do with your ego? They buy it.”

Ortiz takes a slight shot at Devers there at the end by calling out his ego. The Red Sox two-time World Series Champion Ortiz has been there for Devers since he was first coming up with the team.

Devers Roller Coaster Season Continues

Rafael Devers has had quite a controversial, you could say, season with the Boston Red Sox and now the San Francisco Giants. First, Boston appeared not to have notified him when they were bringing in third baseman Alex Bregman. Then, he was stubborn about playing other positions on the field, including first base. Once the season rolled around, Devers got off to a disastrous start by striking out several times in his first handful of games. However, he completely turned it around as the season has progressed, and was easily the Red Sox best hitter. He is hitting .272 with 15 home runs, 33 XBH, and 56 walks. His slugging percentage is .505, and he has an OPS above .900.

Red Sox Outlook After Devers

Devers is no longer a Boston Red Sox player, and as weird as it is to say, there is still baseball to be played, and they must move on. Boston had just swept their rival New York Yankees to get above .500. It would be asinine to believe they are just going to give up on the season. It is now Roman Anthony and Marcelo Mayer’s team, and while both are struggling a bit at the moment, Boston will rely on its two youngest stars the rest of the way. They did get some pitching in return, but it will be curious to see how active they are at this season’s MLB trade deadline in late July.
