The Boston Red Sox are thought to be in the market for a third baseman. After not being able to retain Alex Bregman, third base is now a position of strong need. Aside from not having a third baseman, Boston has had a solid offseason that has featured several trades for names like Willson Contreras and Sonny Gray. The Red Sox biggest signing of the offseason has been Ranger Suárez.

On Sunday, Jeff Passan announced that top free agent slugger Eugenio Suarez is signing with the Cincinnati Reds on a one-year, $15 million deal that includes a mutual option for 2027. Suárez had always been considered to be a top bat on the market due to his power prowess, but the Red Sox were thought to be in on Eugenio until after the signing, when Boston got a brutal update on its chances for the touted third baseman.

Did the Red Sox Make Eugenio Suárez an Offer?

According to MassLive.com’s Chris Cotillo, the Boston Red Sox never made a contract offer to Eugenio Suarez, who ultimately landed with the Reds.

Suárez hit 49 home runs and drove in 118 runs in 2025. The two-time All-Star had a strong contract year with both the Diamondbacks and Seattle Mariners last season, and is now getting paid because of it.

But what does this signing mean for the Red Sox? Boston has not spent money like some had thought they would this offseason, but that doesn’t mean they are in bad shape heading into 2026.

Boston was thought to be a top player in Suárez’s market, and the Boston faithful might be a little upset that the front office couldn’t dish out at least $15 million for one of the best right-handed sluggers on the market, and he’d especially enjoy hitting at Fenway Park as well.

This Suárez news might clear the way for Kristian Campbell or Marcelo Mayer to get full-time reps at third base. As of now, Mayer is listed as the team’s top option on the official depth chart list.

Will the Red Sox Make Any Other Moves?

Trades are totally not off the table for the Red Sox, who have made trades left and right this offseason.

On Sunday, other news was announced that Boston had traded Jordan Hicks to the Chicago White Sox in exchange for a minor league pitcher.

As for other third base options still on the market that Boston could potentially bring in, the top options include Kiké Hernandez, Gio Urshella, and Luis Urias.

The assumption after missing out on Eugenio Suárez and not even making a formal offer is that Boston feels comfortable with its internal options at the position, and it’s unlikely they spend much money on any of the free agent options listed above.
