At this point, every Boston Red Sox fan understands the logjam that is the outfielder. While trade rumors persist surrounding Jarren Duran and Wilyer Abreu, where does young infielder/outfielder Kristian Campbell fit in the fold for the Red Sox this season?
Boston inked Campbell to an eight-year, $60 million extension before last year. Campbell got a handful of at-bats at the big league level and struggled, which prompts FanSided’s Christopher Kline to believe he could benefit from a fresh start elsewhere in MLB.

Should the Red Sox Cut Ties with Kristian Campbell?

GettyAlex Cora tipped his hand at what the opening day lineup might look like.
Kristian Campbell came up to MLB as an infield prospect, but recent moves by Boston indicate that the organization sees him more as an outfielder. This leaves Campbell in a tricky spot because of the outfield logjam.
In Kline’s recent piece, which highlights four players that the Red Sox could move before Opening Day, Campbell is sort of a surprise name on the list:
“Campbell’s path is blocked. The Red Sox would be wise to explore the market — whether it’s for a nice prospect haul, or as part of a larger blockbuster to address an actual area of need. Either way, it’s consolidation time in Boston, and Campbell frankly feels like an odd man out. It’s better to trade him now, rather than waiting for his value to crater.”
Campbell hit .223 in 229 at-bats over 67 games with six home runs and an OPS+ of 86 in his short time in a Red Sox uniform.
It’s easy to understand Kline’s point of trading Campbell before his value dips further, but he’s still just 23, and 229 MLB at-bats is nowhere near enough to judge a young hitter fully. If the Red Sox endure some injuries, Campbell might be able to find some playing time at either first or second base.

What About the Other Potential Trade Candidates?
Kristian Campbell wasn’t the only name in Kline’s piece as a potential name that could be moved before Opening Day. The others include starter Kutter Crawford, Masataka Yoshida, and Triston Casas.
All three (four, including Campbell) of these players just don’t seem to fit into Boston’s play for this 2026 season, so it does make sense as to why they have the potential to be traded, but it’s also unclear if the Red Sox front office has any aspirations of actually agreeing to a deal that would send one of these players away.
The good news for the Red Sox, though, about Kristian Campbell is the fact that he’s very open and willing to try out new positions, which highlights his versatility.
