The Detroit Tigers did not have much to celebrate after the Kansas City Royals completed a three-game sweep Sunday, but Kevin McGonigle once again gave fans something worth watching.
The Tigers rookie doubled home a run in the first inning before launching a two-run home run in the fifth that tied the game 5-5. Detroit eventually lost 11-7, but McGonigle finished the afternoon with three RBI, according to Reuters’ recap.
McGonigle recorded a hit in five of the six games during Detroit’s road trip through Pittsburgh and Kansas City. That production has stood out even more because the Tigers went only 1-5 during the trip.
McGonigle Is Producing While Tigers Struggle

Detroit entered Monday having lost eight of nine, but McGonigle’s rookie campaign continues to become more impressive. The 22-year-old carries a .283/.385/.430 slash line with 14 home runs and 56 RBI through 126 games, according to his official MLB player page.
McGonigle has done more than survive his first full Major League campaign. Detroit has watched him become one of its most consistent players while handling a workload he never experienced in the minor leagues.
The young infielder never played more than 88 games during any of his previous minor league campaigns. He has already moved well beyond that total while continuing to provide Detroit with quality at-bats in serious situations.
Detroit’s Future Is Starting to Take Shape

The Tigers did not expect the final weeks of August to become this frustrating. Detroit has fallen behind the Chicago White Sox in the AL Central and remains outside the Wild Card field, according to MLB’s current standings.
That makes the development of players such as McGonigle even more important. The Tigers have Max Clark, Hao-Yu Lee, Brett Callahan, and other young players receiving meaningful opportunities while the organization reshapes significant portions of its roster.
McGonigle increasingly appears to be the player at the center of that movement. His production has remained consistent even while Detroit’s results have gone in the opposite direction.
There is still enough time for the Tigers to make the final month interesting. If they cannot, fans may eventually look back at this stretch as the moment McGonigle stopped looking like merely an exciting rookie and started looking like a player Detroit could build around.
