Troy Melton finally looked mortal Friday night. The Detroit Tigers right-hander allowed three runs, two earned, across 5.2 innings in a 5-2 loss to the Kansas City Royals. His ERA climbed to 1.60.

For almost any other starter, that line would qualify as acceptable. For Melton, it represented one of his least dominant outings of the season. He entered the game with 11 of his first 14 starts featuring one earned run or fewer.

The performance did not raise a question about Melton’s ability. It highlighted a different issue: Detroit needs a young pitcher coming off an elbow problem to carry an ace’s responsibility through a desperate playoff chase.

Melton Became Detroit’s Ace Faster Than Expected

Melton opened the season on the injured list because of right elbow inflammation and did not return until late May. He has since transformed Detroit’s rotation.

The 25-year-old entered Friday with a 1.49 ERA through 14 starts. According to MLB’s postgame analysis, only Al Benton posted a lower ERA through his first 14 starts of a Tigers season since earned run average became an official statistic.

Melton now has 90 major-league innings in 2026. His career high is 129.1 innings across the Minors, Majors and postseason in 2025, according to an earlier MLB workload report. A normal turn through Detroit’s remaining schedule could push him close to that total, and his rehab work added pitches that do not appear in his MLB line.

Detroit once expected Tarik Skubal and Casey Mize to anchor this rotation. Their deadline trades moved Melton into the lead role almost overnight.

The Tigers Have No Easy Way to Protect Him

Detroit has not announced an innings limit or indicated that Melton faces another health concern. Melton previously said no restriction had been relayed to him. Predicting a shutdown would go beyond the available evidence.

Elbow inflammation delayed Melton’s season, making the conversation unavoidable. Detroit must distinguish prudent prevention from a restriction that weakens the club when every loss changes the standings.

The Tigers still need to manage the risk. They could use six-man stretches, provide extra rest on off days or shorten selected starts when the bullpen allows it. Each option becomes harder while Detroit remains within reach of a Wild Card, and injuries continue to affect the pitching staff.

Melton offered the right perspective after Friday’s loss. He noted that the Tigers have remained close in games even during their current slide. The Reuters recap showed that Kansas City never overwhelmed him; Detroit simply failed to capitalize on enough scoring opportunities.

The schedule only increases the tension. After Kansas City, the Tigers return home to face Tampa Bay and the Los Angeles Dodgers, two clubs with a combined 153-103 record entering Saturday.

Detroit needs Melton to pitch like an ace. It also needs him to be healthy beyond September. How the Tigers balance those goals could shape both the fading 2026 race and the rotation they build around him next year.
