Mets' shortstop Francisco Lindor kept it real when discussing his retirement plans

The New York Mets are entering the 2026 campaign with a roster that is very different from the one they featured in 2025. One of the team’s top players who is still with the team heading into the new season is superstar shortstop Francisco Lindor, and it appears he will have to shoulder a bigger load for the Mets moving forward.

Ever since finding his way to the majors back in 2015, Lindor has been one of the most consistent players in the majors. However, now that he’s in his 30s, retirement rumors will start to swirl around him more frequently. For much of his career, Lindor has had a plan in place for his retirement, but he recently provided an eye-opening update on that plan ahead of the 2026 season.

Francisco Lindor Dishes on Retirement

Lindor spent the first six years of his career with the Cleveland Guardians, where he turned himself into a legit five-tool player at the shortstop position. During that time, Lindor earned four straight All-Star selections from 2016 to 2019, while also earning a pair of Gold Glove and Silver Slugger Awards during that stretch.

After the 2020 season, Lindor was traded to the Mets, where he promptly signed a massive 10-year, $341 million contract extension. While he only has one All-Star selection to his name during his time in New York, Lindor has remained as consistent as ever, and he is coming off yet another strong campaign in 2025 (.267 BA, 31 HR, 86 RBI, 31 SB, .811 OPS) that saw him finish 10th in the National League MVP race.

At 32 years old, Lindor is still in his prime, but as he continues to get older, it will be tougher and tougher for him to continue producing at a similarly high level. It may seem strange to consider, but Lindor is closer to retiring than it may seem, and while he initially set a goal for himself to play in the majors until he’s 39 years old, it sounds like that decision will likely be one made with his family in mind now.

“I always said I want to play 22 years and that was going to put me at 39 years old. That was when I was single,” Lindor said in an interview with casino.org. “Now I would love to play 22 seasons still, but then the decision is going to come down to me and my wife and my kids when I get to that age. But at the end of the day, it’s one of those where it’s a privilege if you get to play to that age. Haven’t really thought about, am I going to retire when I get there?”

Francisco Lindor Not Focused on Retirement Ahead of 2026 Campaign

Despite these comments, it’s clear that retirement is not on Lindor’s mind currently. He’s still playing at an incredibly high level, and if all goes according to plan, the Mets will have a legit shot at competing for a World Series in 2026. Plus, he still has nearly $200 million left on his current contract with New York.

Lindor is currently working his way back to full health after he underwent surgery back in February to repair a broken left hamate bone. While that has put his status for Opening Day in jeopardy, Lindor believes he will be ready to go for the start of the new season. The Mets will kick off their 2026 slate on Mar. 26 against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
