Mets’ Bichette Hints at Future Plans After Dad’s Surprising Remarks

New York Mets star Bo Bichette has made some interesting comments regarding his future with the club. The infielder opted to leave the Toronto Blue Jays in January after playing his entire career with the team. Despite nearly winning a World Series, Bichette chose to join a Mets team that disappointingly missed the 2025 playoffs.

Many fans will say that Bichette’s decision to jump ship came down to the financial aspects of his new deal. After all, the Mets gave the star a three-year, $126 million contract with a $40 million signing bonus. There were also assertions that Bichette had a strained relationship with both the Blue Jays coaching staff and front office.

Bichette, however, now claims that he wanted more of the spotlight. Toronto is obviously a prominent North American city. Nevertheless, it is not New York. “My whole life, I always dreamed of playing on the biggest stages,” Bichette told The Athletic’s Will Sammon. As far as baseball goes, the stage does not get any bigger than New York.

Dante Bichette, Bo’s father, recently revealed that his son kept an eye on the Big Apple while playing in Toronto. During a recent interview with the New York Post, the former Colorado Rockies star claimed that “Bo has always wanted to try playing in New York.” Dante even asserted that his son would be a bigger star if he played in the United States rather than Canada.

Bo Bichette Commits to New York Mets Despite Opt-Out Clause in Contract

GettyBo Bichette’s defense will be watched closely by the media in 2026.

Although Bo Bichette is admittedly looking forward to the pressure of playing in New York, he could very well leave the Mets after just one season. Despite the three-year deal, the contract includes two opt-out clauses. Bichette could trigger these stipulations after the 2026 or 2027 seasons.

Including the clauses is a fairly common practice these days. Nevertheless, it is still certainly a risky move by the Mets. Bichette, however, has attempted to ease concerns over the situation by claiming that he sees himself as a long-term Met. “I just look at it as I am fully invested in this team right now, and I see myself on this team in the future,” Bichette told Sammon.

“That’s how I feel. Obviously, the goal of any player is to have freedom for their career. So I am definitely grateful for that. But I am fully invested in this team and ready to help this team win, and I really hope it works out for the long term.”

Mets Under Pressure in 2026 as Bichette Changes Positions

Ultimately, Bichette’s future will likely come down to how both he and the Mets perform in 2026. New York is widely expected to bounce back after the brutal collapse a year ago. Team officials revamped the club’s roster by making several major moves in the offseason.

Bichette is undergoing a significant change as well. The typical shortstop has moved over to third base due to the presence of Francisco Lindor. The switch did not exactly get off to a great start. A video of Bichette doing fielding drills in February was mostly met with ridicule on social media. The infielder also made an error at the hot corner earlier in spring training.

Despite the defensive concerns, Bichette is still performing at the plate. So far this preseason, the star has 10 hits and eight RBIs in 32 at-bats.
