The New York Mets have been the most trade-happy team in MLB this offseason. Most of the moves have brought in welcome additions to the club, but there’s also a world where New York trades away some of its young capital. With Francisco Lindor, Jorge Polanco, Bo Bichette, and Marcus Semien expected to be the starters on the infield, that leaves Brett Baty, Ronny Mauricio, and Mark Vientos as potentially expendable options.

The reports indicate that the Mets are more willing to hold onto Baty because of his versatility, which means Mark Vientos may be subject to a trade at some point. A recent trade idea by Sports Illustrated echoes the sentiment that Vientos could be moved, and the Miami Marlins, an NL East division foe, are a potential suitor.

Mark Vientos Floated as Trade Option in Recent Post

In a recent MLB mock trade idea by Sports Illustrated’s Thomas Carelli, the New York Mets offload Mark Vientos to the Marlins for pitcher Tyler Phillips, and another prospect:

“The team has a surplus at 3rd base: Bo Bichette, Brett Baty, Mark Vientos, and Ronny Mauricio. They can do great work by moving at least one of these assets and filling another gap: the bullpen. The Mets do not have a bad bullpen, but it is relatively average in MLB. To compete, their bullpen must be better than average. They can easily trade a surplus or a shortage on the mound.”

The idea is that the Mets can improve their pitching staff by making a move involving Vientos, Baty, or Mauricio. While there doesn’t seem to be any traction that these guys will be moved, New York has made trades in a flash in the past.

Should the Mets Trade Mark Vientos?

The next question about this hypothetical is whether the New York Mets should trade Mark Vientos.

Vientos enjoyed a true breakout season in 2024, hitting 27 home runs over 111 games.

However, he took a bit of a step back in 2o25 in a more prominent role with the team. Vientos still hit 17 home runs in ’25, but posted a -bWAR and struck out 115 times and hit just .233.

He’s still just 26 and carries a lot of promise as a hitter, but the Mets have made it clear he’s not going to be involved in this upcoming season as prior seasons.

The 2026 season will really be Vientos third full MLB season, so he still has a lot of time to develop, but if the Mets are not going to use him as a primary infielder, it makes sense to just trade him now and try to acquire some high-level pitching.
