New reports indicate that the New York Mets are currently focusing on the trade market rather than the free agent class. New York continues to be linked to the top options in both markets, but it makes sense why the Mets might want to dip into their deep farm system to pull off huge offseason deals.

The reason for the recent report is likely due to the Mets’ reported interest in Brewers starter Freddy Peralta. However, if the Mets are seriously interested in pulling off trades, Cleveland Guardians‘ outfielder Steven Kwan should be at the top of their wishlist, due to the Mets’ need in the outfield.

Mets Trade Idea Offloads Kodai Senga for Steven Kwan

Earlier in MLB’s offseason, there were rumors surrounding Kodai Senga and his potential to be traded for another impact player.

In this trade idea, the New York Mets send starter Kodai Senga and prospects Jonah Tong and A.J. Ewing to the Cleveland Guardians in return for All-Star outfielder Steven Kwan.

The Mets may not want to get rid of Senga due to his production on the mound, but injuries (hamstring) might be concerning for Senga, and he’s in the middle of a five-year, $75 million deal.

Senga was an All-Star in 2023 after making 29 starts, but he has made just 23 starts since, and is now on the wrong side of 30 (32). If Senga isn’t traded this offseason, expect the rumors to persist into the 2026 season.

Jonah Tong appears to be MLB-ready, as he saw a handful of starts in 2025 for the Mets, but he is still a top trade asset for New York.

As for the centerpiece of this deal, Steven Kwan, it is shocking that there haven’t been more rumors tailored to the Mets being interested in the two-time All-Star left fielder. Kwan is thought to be one of the best left fielders in the game.

How Would Steven Kwan Help the Mets?

Another reason the Mets should be interested in Steven Kwan is that David Stearns has been adamant about upgrading the team’s defense.

They’ve already done this by adding Marcus Semien and trading away Brandon Nimmo, but Steven Kwan has been awarded a Gold Glove all four seasons he’s played in MLB.

Despite not posting a season with 15 or more home runs, Steven Kwan remains a league-average hitter and even posted an OPS+ of 126 in 2025.

In 156 games in 2025, Kwan hit .272 with 170 hits, 29 doubles, and got on base at a .330 clip.

Kwan would be an immediate impact player for the Mets, but it would certainly cost them a player like Kodai Senga, as mentioned, and two prospects in Tong and Ewing.
