The New York Mets are thought to be firmly in the market for a starting pitcher, but some reports have indicated that the Mets’ front office is focused on the trade market rather than adding via the free agent market, which would likely be much more costly.

Luckily for the Mets, there are many quality options out on the trade market as MLB’s hot stove season roars on. The big question around the league at this moment is, will the Milwaukee Brewers move on from their ace, Freddy Peralta? If they do, the Mets have already shown reported interest, but this massive offseason trade idea by Bleacher Report would drastically improve New York’s pitching staff.

Will the Mets Land Freddy Peralta?

This is the million-dollar question at the moment for Mets fans. The Brewers have noted that the sell price for Peralta remains very high, but the Mets have a deep farm system and can certainly afford to cut ties with tradeable assets if it means a more competitive 2026 team.

A recent trade piece by Bleacher Report’s Joel Reuter proposes the Mets acquiring Freddy Peralta and All-Star reliever Trevor Megill in exchange for three prospects:

“To NYM: RHP Freddy Peralta, RHP Trevor Megill
To MIL: RHP Jonah Tong, 3B Jacob Reimer, 2B/OF A.J. Ewing”

“It also provides some insurance for Devin Williams in the closer’s role after he had an up-and-down 2025 season, as Trevor Megill has 51 saves over the last two years and would join Luke Weaver and A.J. Minter to form a strong group of setup options.”

How Would Freddy Peralta Improve the Mets?

Freddy Peralta would immediately become the Mets’ ace. He’s fresh off his best season in MLB, posting a 2.70 ERA over 176.2 innings and 204 strikeouts.

Another thing that makes Peralta such an attractive target is his ability to take the ball every fifth day, which was an issue for the Mets’ starters last season.

Milwaukee has proven in the past that it does not like to extend its top stars, so it makes sense for the Brewers to move off Peralta and Megill now while they are still under team-friendly contracts, before they hit the open market and demand a lucrative contract.

Freddy Peralta has made 30+ starts and recorded 200+ strikeouts in three straight seasons. He’s earning just $8 million this year, but is set to be a free agent after the 2026 season.

However, the Mets front office must decipher what the price for Peralta is, because it’s possible he just spends one year in New York and then departs in free agency. Or the Mets could work out a trade-and-sign deal, where they acquire these two All-Star pitchers and then sign Peralta to an extension.
