Mets Named ‘Best Fit’ for A’s $67 Million Starter

With the New York Mets already being one of the active teams this trade deadline, pulling off a deal with the Baltimore Orioles for southpaw Gregory Soto, it appears the Mets will be active over the next week, and more is in store for the team from Queens.

The Mets are in a tight divisional race with the Philadelphia Phillies, sitting just 0.5 games up on their rival with about 60 games to go. There have been rumors that the Mets are in the starting pitcher, and it makes sense with how injured their rotation has been lately. Sean Manaea recently had his first couple of outings of the season, which is a welcome sign.

Mets Linked to Starter Luis Severino in Potential Reunion

The New York Mets faithful are no strangers to starter Luis Severino, as he was a strong catalyst in their postseason last season, before testing free agency and ultimately signing with the Athletics on a three-year, $67 million contract.

Now, according to Bleacher Report, the Mets are named a ‘best fit’ for a reunion between Luis Severino and New York:

“He has been open with his disdain for Sutter Health Park, and you can hardly blame the guy. It is a minor league park, after all, and he has a 6.68 ERA there compared to a 3.10 ERA on the road. Yes, Severino deserves some blame for his bad fortunes in 2025. He doesn’t have strong metrics, with the especially bad ones including a whiff rate in the first percentile and a strikeout rate in the eighth percentile. Still, this is a two-time All-Star whose right arm remains a live wire. The Mets got a 3.91 ERA and 182.0 innings out of it in 2024, and they sure could use more pitching of that ilk amid a rotation that is beset by question marks.”

That was Zachary Rymer, who provided the insight on why Severino may be moved. One of the biggest reasons a reunion is possible because the Mets may be the only team willing to take on the contract.

Would the Mets Be Willing to Pull This Deal Off?

Considering that Severino was very good for the New York Mets in the playoffs last season, it might be enough reason for New York to welcome him back. He provided them with 4.1 scoreless innings in the NLCS against the Los Angeles Dodgers. In six innings in both the Wild Card and Divisional Series, he didn’t give up more than three earned runs.

The Mets are poised to make a deep run in the playoffs again this year, and could use some proven arms to get them through. Although Severino has struggled, he has made all 22 starts he’s had to make this season and is on pace for another 180-inning season.

With the Athletics likely willing to sell whatever they can, and a disgruntled Severino having to pitch in a minor league park, this deal actually might not cost New York all that much if they are just willing to take on the contract. Other starters like Kodai Senga and Frankie Montas have had to miss extended time this season, and David Peterson and Clay Holmes’ inning count has gotten high. New York could certainly be in the market for another starter, and a reunion with the Athletics’ Severino certainly feels possible.
