The New York Mets need to make wholesale changes this season. Sitting at 10-21, there needs to be a major roster shakeup.
A report surfaced earlier today by Mets reporter Jorge Castillo that the only non-tradable players on the Mets’ pitching staff are Nolan McLean, Freddy Peralta, and Clay Holmes. This makes sense as they are the three starters who have actually performed this season. However, that leaves an interesting discussion to be had about David Peterson and Kodai Senga, who are both former All-Star starters.
If the Mets can find a solid return package for Kodai Senga (which may be hard), they should trade him.

Should the Mets Trade Kodai Senga?

The Kodai Senga experiment in New York may be coming to an end. Senga signed a five-year, $75 million contract before throwing one pitch in MLB, and he actually excelled in his first season with the Mets, but things have gone downhill since.
After being named an All-Star in 2023, Senga hasn’t been able to regain that form.
In 2026, over five starts and 20 innings pitched, Senga has an ERA of 9.00, has given up five home runs, and issued 13 walks. Those are very poor numbers, and the Mets will have to make a difficult decision with Senga if it doesn’t turn around. Throwing him in the minors to ‘fix his stuff’ likely isn’t a solid alternative due to his contract status.
So, trading Senga might be the best option for the Mets. Expect New York to be very active in trades this season, and Kodai Senga will be at the forefront of rumors and speculation.

Who Could the Mets Acquire for Kodai Senga?

The next part of this idea is who/what the Mets could get in return if they trade away Senga.
First, it’s important to note some teams that may be willing to take on the contract and also need starting pitching.
Some teams that come to mind are the San Diego Padres, Houston Astros, Baltimore Orioles, and the Arizona Diamondbacks.
If the Mets were to trade Kodai Senga, they wouldn’t get much in return at this very juncture. They could wait until his stock rises a bit after such a poor start, or if they want to trade him now, getting any sort of prospect package would be welcome.
Along with Senga, the Mets may also be looking to trade David Peterson, who has also been terrible to start the 2026 season.
