Brewers Open To Dealing Freddy Peralta – Yankees Could Have What They Want

The Milwaukee Brewers are looking for young controllable starting pitching in a return package for Freddy Peralta, according to Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon of The Athletic.

From a Yankees perspective, they have plenty of young starting pitching at the major league level and on the rise throughout their farm system. Currently on the big league roster, they have young starting pitchers such as Cam Schlittler, Will Warren, and Luis Gil.

Yankees Have Young Pitching To Offer Milwaukee

While it doesn’t seem probable that the Yankees would give up Schlittler in a deal for Peralta, Warren and Gil, on the other hand, are a fair question. Luis Gil is 27 years old and won rookie of the year in 2024, posting a 15-7 record with a 3.50 ERA and 171 strikeouts in 151.2 innings pitched. Gil is known as a pitcher with a power fastball, great slider, and change-up, but has struggled with his command over the years, including his walk rate, as well as with staying healthy enough to pitch. Gil was sidelined for much of 2025, dating back to spring training, due to a right lat strain, and returned in early August, when he posted a 3.32 ERA in 57 innings, but continued to struggle with his command and overall effectiveness.

Will Warren is 26 years old and had an up-and-down rookie season in 2025. He pitched 162.1 innings to the tune of a 4.44 ERA, but led rookie pitchers with 171 strikeouts. He had some very promising starts, including a five-inning, seven-strikeout shutout performance against the A’s in June, a 10-strikeout performance against the Rangers in May, and an 11-strikeout performance in June versus the Angels. Mixed in were some terrible starts, especially against Toronto on July 2nd, when he allowed eight earned runs, which inflated his ERA over 4, and led to mixed results throughout the 2025 season.

However, the promise is there, as he relies on five pitches: a 4-seam fastball, sinker, sweeper, change, and curve. He’s a right-handed pitcher who can really spin the baseball and change eye levels, and his workload in 2025 speaks to how heavily the Yankees needed to rely on him due to injuries to their starting pitching staff throughout the season.

Yankees Farm System Has Many Pitching Prospects

The Yankees also have a plethora of pitching prospects on the rise in their farm system. Their 2nd-best prospect is hard-throwing right-hander Carlos Lagrange, who is 22 years old and 6’7 “, 248 lbs, featuring a wicked fastball that sits around 97-99 mph but can top out at 102 mph. He even throws a mid-80s sweeping slider, along with a high-80s cutter and change-up. Lagrange posted a 3.53 ERA with 168 strikeouts in 120 innings pitched, holding opponents to a .191 batting average in 2025. Lagrange still needs to work on his command/control, but the stuff is incredibly raw and promising, which makes him highly regarded within the Yankees system.

The Yankees’ third-best prospect is pitcher Elmer Rodriguez, whom the Yankees acquired in a trade with the Red Sox for catcher Carlos Narvaez back in December of 2024. In 2025, Rodriguez was 11-8 with a 2.58 ERA, throwing 150 innings, striking out 176 batters, and holding opponents to a .192 batting average. He’s shown consistent development and growth from a strong campaign in 2024 as well where he posted a 2.91 ERA with 102 strikeouts in 89.2 innings pitched between Low and High A.

Rodriguez has a fastball that has gone up a few mph since being traded to the Yankees, now sitting 93-96 when he was originally around 91-95 with Boston, in which he also throws a high 70’s curve, and an 80’s splitter and change up. He’s a pitcher who can make an impact in a big league rotation within a year, if not sooner, with his estimated Major League timeline being 2027, but with the strides in his development, it could be even sooner.

The Yankees also have other highly regarded pitching prospects on their top 10 list, such as Ben Hess, Bryce Cunningham, Chase Hampton, Henry Lalane, Brock Selvidge, and Brendan Beck, who can all help get a deal done with Milwaukee.

Rosenthal and Sammon stated in their latest article that, from the Yankees’ point of view, Peralta’s cost in terms of a return package could possibly be Carlos Lagrange and Elmer Rodriguez. That would be a significant price for the Yankees to pay for the one-year rental of Peralta, but in this day and age, if you want to get value, you have to give up value in return. Regardless, the Yankees and Brewers seem like trade partners that could realistically be an ideal match when looking at both sides needs.
