The New York Yankees are off to an incredible start to the 2026 season.

On Saturday, they beat the Baltimore Orioles (at home) by a score of 9-4.

They currently have a 2-0 lead in the series with the third game on Sunday afternoon.

With how well they’re currently playing, there is no immediate need to the roster right now.

That said, any team trying to win a World Series is always looking to make deals ahead of the MLB playoffs.

In a recent interview with Brandon Tierney of Unleashed, YES Network star Michael Kay spoke about the one position the Yankees could look to improve.

Kay: “I think if they make a big deal Brandon, it’s gonna be for a closer.”

While Kay was just sharing an opinion, his expertise on the Yankees carries a lot of weight.

The trade deadline is still a ways off, but adding a star closer (or additional relief help) would make sense.

Who Is The Current Closer?

Right now, David Bednar is the team’s closer.

He is in his second season playing for the Yankees.

Last year (in 64 games for the Pirates and Yankees), Bednar went 6-5 with a 2.30 ERA and 27 saves.

The Yankees wrote (via X) on July 31, 2025: “The New York Yankees today announced that they have acquired two-time All-Star right-handed pitcher David Bednar from the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for minor league catchers Rafael Flores and Edgleen Pérez, and minor league outfielder Brian Sánchez.”

So far this season, the two-time MLB All-Star has gone 1-2 with a 3.55 ERA in 13 games with nine saves.

Before the Yankees, he spent part of five seasons with the Pirates (and two with the Padres).

While the 31-year-old has been very good, there is never enough elite pitchers a contender can have in their bullpen.

Over 328 career games, Bednar has gone 19-25 with a 3.16 ERA and 120 saves.

Yankees Right Now

The Yankees are the first-place team in the American League East with a 22-11 record in 33 games.

They are 10-5 in 15 games at home.

Last season, the Yankees lost in the ALDS.
