David Bednar: Breaking News

Bednar struck out the side in a perfect ninth inning Saturday to record his 14th save of the season in a 3-1 win over the Blue Jays. The Yankees closer got Andres Gimenez and Nathan Lukes to flail away at splitters, while he fanned George Springer on a 97.5 mph fastball. Bednar held a 5.14 ERA on May 18, but since then he's reeled off seven straight scoreless appearances, allowing just two hits in 7.2 innings with an 11:3 K:BB over that span to lower his ERA to a more palatable 3.77.

Bednar secured the save Thursday against the Guardians, retiring all three batters he faced in the ninth inning. He did not record a strikeout. Bednar made quick work of the Cleveland batters Thursday, firing eight of his 12 pitches for strikes. The 31-year-old right-hander has submitted four consecutive scoreless outings, strengthening his hold on New York's closer role for the time being. Through 25 innings, Bednar still has a shaky 4.32 ERA, 1.52 WHIP and 29:11 K:BB while converting 13 of his 15 save chances.

Bednar earned the save Monday against the Yankees, issuing one walk in a scoreless ninth inning. Bednar entered with a one-run lead and worked around a two-out walk to Lane Thomas to secure his 12th save of the season. The veteran closer has experienced an inconsistent month of May, allowing runs in five of his 10 appearances during that span. Bednar now owns a 4.70 ERA, 1.57 WHIP and 28:10 K:BB across 23 innings this season.
