They say timing is everything in baseball. But for Oswald Peraza, baseball’s unforgiving clock is ticking, and the New York Yankees? They may have wound it.
Once a top‑two prospect on the cusp of becoming the next big thing in the Bronx, Peraza now finds himself the poster child for what critics call a sputtering development path – painstakingly nurtured, then sidestepped, and now, as one scathing report puts it, “ruined” by the very organization that brought him in.
Since bursting onto the scene with defensive wizardry and slick infield instincts, Peraza’s bat has never matched the hype. And in many eyes, the Yankees didn’t just fail to prod his bat into form – they starved it.
Thomas Carannante of Yanks Go Yard suggests that the Yankees may just have to admit the mistakes they made with Peraza and simply cut bait.
“All in all, the Yankees ruined Peraza with their preferential treatment of Anthony Volpe years ago,” wrote Carannante, who predicts Peraza will likely be designated for assignment in the near future. “It is what it is.”
Yankees Fans Decry Oswald Peraza Getting ‘Burned’ by Organization
From trapping him in part-time duty to experimenting with positional gymnastics – learning outfield, jumping to third base – it all smells of organizational scattershot, a messy reminder of what happens when a prospect isn’t valued enough to be developed or shipped.
Fan outcry isn’t far behind. One prominent Reddit thread is filled with criticisms blasting the team’s stubbornness.
“Peraza was a batch of cookies the organization left in the oven too long and burned,” one poster said.
“Peraza has not been good, but if you ask anyone that plays high level baseball the toughest thing to do is produce when you are not getting consistent ab’s nor have any clue when you will get them, playing 1 game a week and then in that 1 game and you get 3 ab’s feeling pressure that if you don’t produce you don’t know when you will get your next ab’s is very very difficult, especially since peraza at every level was always getting regular ab’s,” another explained.
Oswald Peraza may be Next Player DFA’d by Yankees
It’s been a season of turbulence at third base in the Bronx.
It began tragically in early May with the season-ending loss of Oswaldo Cabrera, who suffered a broken ankle that would require surgery. In the months since, the Yankees have tried several options at the position, but none of them have taken advantage of the situation. Even three-time All-Star infielder and four-time Gold Glove Award winner DJ LeMahieu, who opened the season on the injured list, was unable to sufficiently fill the spot, and he was eventually DFA’d on July 9.
Peraza, who has posted a grim slash line of .147/.208/.237, may be the next one to be shown the door.
Once a defensive gem with bat‑speed tools, Peraza is now a cautionary tale in the art of mishandled potential. And with the July 31 deadline approaching, many are wondering: is this the end of the road for Peraza in pinstripes, or a final, last‑chance audition, desperately propped up until a fresh option arrives?
