George Lombard Jr. is the New York Yankees top prospect, and all Yankees fans are eager to see the 20-year-old in Pinstripes, but his development is also very important to the organization.

On Thursday, the team announced that they are reassigning George Lombard Jr. to minor league camp following their game. So this means he’s going to start the 2026 season in the minor leagues.

This move will be subject to some outrage, but this is the best decision for the team and Lombard’s development. It’s not far-fetched to believe that he will debut at some point in 2026.

George Lombard Jr. Will Start 2026 Season in Minors

Baseball America's Josh Norris expects George Lombard Jr. to have a "big year" in 2026. Here's more on the top New York Yankees prospect.

GettyBaseball America’s Josh Norris expects a huge year from this young New York Yankee in 2026.

With this decision by the New York Yankees, top prospect and 20-year-old middle infielder George Lombard Jr. will further develop in the minor leagues to start the season.

In 27 spring training at-bats over the past few weeks, Lombard Jr. carries a .185 batting average with one home run and six RBI.

He’s only been playing professional baseball for two full seasons. In 2025, with AA Somerset and High-A Hudson Valley, Lombard hit .235 with nine home runs and 49 RBI over 132 games. Not the greatest minor league stats, but again, he’s still just 20 years old.

He will likely start with AA Somerset again this year, where he can get extended looks at some better MiLB arms and the Yankees can further assess from there.

Is George Lombard Jr. the Yankees’ SS Answer?

Many people are latching onto George Lombard Jr. due to his projectability and the thought that he will be the succession plan for the Yankees and their ugly shortstop situation right now.

Lombard Jr. is a strong 6-foot-2, 190-pound infielder with a strong arm and a lot of pop in his bat. That power hasn’t shown in the minors yet, as Lombard Jr. has just 14 total home runs in over 930 at-bats down on the Yankees farm.

In order for him to get a call-up this season, he’d have to really shine before September, and then he may get a chance to get big-league at-bats, but his estimated time of arrival in MLB should still be either 2027 or 2028.
