The New York Yankees have made a plethora of small signings this offseason. While the fan base is growing impatient, it seems clear that New York might just have one or two big splashes in them, and Yankees’ fans will have to live with the small, more meaningless signings.

On Sunday, Jon Heyman reported that the New York Yankees are signing former St. Louis Cardinals infielder Paul DeJong to a minor-league deal, which includes an invite to MLB camp. The financial details of the contract remain unknown, but it’s likely predicated on if DeJong breaks spring camp with the club.

Paul DeJong Signs With Yankees, Brings Defensive Versatility

It might not be the big splash that Yankees’ fans across the country are hoping for, but it’s another step in the right direction for New York.

After signing Paul DeJong, he brings defensive versatility, being able to play anywhere on the infield. He has been somewhat of a journeyman across MLB for the past several seasons, but Paul DeJong was once a mainstay in the Cardinals lineup. He was named an All-Star in 2019, which was one of his best seasons (30 home runs, 30 doubles).

Paul DeJong most recently played for the Nationals in 2025. He appeared in 57 games and hit six home runs. However, DeJong isn’t too far removed from a 20+ home run season, as he hit 24 long balls with the White Sox and Royals in 2024.

Staying on the field has been an issue for DeJong in the past five seasons, as on a few different occasions, he’s been unable to play at least 80 games; however, with the Yankees now, DeJong will have a chance to put together a good spring and maybe earn a spot on the roster to open up the season.

Yankees’ Infield Options

The only issue for Paul DeJong is that the New York Yankees seem to be set at every infield spot at the moment.

The middle infield is controlled by Jazz Chisholm Jr. at second and Anthony Volpe/Jose Caballero at shortstop. Ryan McMahon appears to be the everyday third baseman, and even if the Yankees don’t re-sign Paul Goldschmidt, Ben Rice will likely be the everyday man at the other hot corner.

The Yankees will serve as Paul DeJong’s seventh MLB organization, and he is a career .229 hitter with 146 home runs in 935 games played. He is now 32 years old, and with almost 10 years of MLB service time, DeJong is close to earning a lifetime pension, and it will be interesting to see if the Yankees help him achieve that.
