The New York Yankees are discussing a possible trade with the Miami Marlins for right-handed starting pitcher Edward Cabrera, according to reporters Chris Kirschner and Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, and their latest article published in the New York Times.

Cabrera, age 27, is coming off his fourth full season with the Miami Marlins, in which he posted an 8-7 record with a 3.53 ERA and 150 strikeouts in 137.2 innings pitched.

A Lot To Like With Edward Cabrera

2025 was a career year up to this point for Cabrera, who reached a career high in terms of innings pitched and strikeouts, as well as a 1.1 home runs per 9 percentage. Cabrera has an impressive fastball, averaging 96.9 mph in 2025, placing him in the 87th percentile amongst starting pitchers, as well as in the 74th, 78th, and 72nd percentile for chase, whiff, and K percentages in 2025, according to Baseball Savant.

Cabrera is under team control through the 2028 season and is set to make only $3.75 million in 2026 before arbitration, according to Spotrac. Because of all these factors, and a pitcher who’s still relatively young at just 27, it means the Marlins will likely be asking for a significant package in return. One also needs to factor in the return package the Tampa Bay Rays received for starting pitcher Shane Baz from the Orioles, who’s not on the same tier in terms of upside and success as Cabrera was this past season.

Yankees Need Starting Pitching

Cabrera would slot nicely into a Yankees rotation that will have to navigate the first couple months of the season without starting pitchers Gerrit Cole, Carlos Rodon, and Clarke Schmidt. It also gives them some insurance in case another starting pitcher in their rotation goes down with an injury during spring training or the regular season.

Kirschner also reports that the Yankees are in discussions about trades for other starting pitchers, such as Milwaukee Brewers ace, right-handed starting pitcher Freddy Peralta.

The Yankees trading for a pitcher such as Cabrera could cost them one of, if not both of, their young outfielders in Spencer Jones and Jasson Dominguez. The Yankees’ farm system is also filled with pitching prospects such as Elmer Rodriguez, Bryce Cunningham, Ben Hess, Chase Hampton, Henry Lalane, and Brock Selvidge, who all rank in the Yankees’ top 10 within their system.

The one concern with Cabrera, however, is health and durability. In four seasons, the most he pitched was this past year (2025). He dealt with elbow injuries in July and August of 2025, and knee and shoulder injuries in 2024.

The Yankees cannot afford to trade for another starting pitcher only to be hampered by the injury bug again. It’s always a risk with starting pitchers, of course, but this is something the Yankees will have to especially monitor when it comes to trade talks for Cabrera, as it relates not only to his long-term health/risk attached but also in terms of the return package the Yankees would give up in return to the Marlins.

It’s also worth noting that these are not the first discussions the Yankees have had with the Marlins in recent memory over one of their starting pitchers. The Yankees did discuss a possible deal for Marlins starting pitcher Sandy Alcantara at the 2025 trade deadline, in which a name rumored to be in a return package to Miami was the Yankees’ top outfield prospect, Spencer Jones. However, a deal ultimately never materialized, and the Yankees made trades to upgrade their bullpen and bench.
