Kyle Schwarber of the Philadelphia Phillies continues to show why he’s one of the top power hitters in Major League Baseball, blasting 45 home runs this season. At 32 years old, Schwarber will have an interesting free agency this winter, with the Phillies likely looking to keep him around.
Despite that, others will have some interest. The Texas Rangers, according to Mark Feinsand, could be a potential team that gets in the mix. Schwarber is from Ohio, so he might want to stay closer to home, but the Rangers are an intriguing team after winning a World Series in 2023 and struggling a bit since.
“Players entering their age-33 season don’t tend to find themselves this high on the list, but Schwarber is an exception. His plus power has him leading the NL with 45 home runs and 109 RBIs in 127 games, and he’s already set a career high in fWAR (4.2) with more than a month remaining in the season. Schwarber has the ability to play left field on occasion, but he’s essentially a full-time DH who will make any lineup better immediately upon arrival,” he wrote.
What’s the Latest on Phillies, Kyle Schwarber Situation
The Philadelphia Phillies‘ keeping Schwarber in town will likely come down to the money he gets. If, for some reason, Schwarber gets $200 million, which is very unlikely barring anything drastic changing, they should have enough to re-sign him.
When examining how much Schwarber could be on the market, Joel Reuter of Bleacher Report questioned if he could get up to $120 million over four years. $30 million AAV seems fair for a player who can hit 40 home runs per year with relative ease.
Last time he hit the open market, Kyle Schwarber signed a four-year, $79 million deal with the Philadelphia Phillies following a 2021 season where he posted a 149 OPS+ with 32 home runs and 3.5 WAR in 113 games…
“Few players on the market are capable of completely transforming an offense, but he can turn a middling offense into a legitimate threat with his top-tier power and elite on-base ability. Is a four-year, $120 million deal too much to pay for that sort of impact? We shall see,” Reuter wrote.
Will Kyle Schwarber Stay in Philadelphia?
Regarding what Schwarber is looking for this winter, staying with the Philadelphia Phillies sounds like something he’s interested in. When speaking with Alex Coffey of the Philadelphia Inquirer, Schwarber stated that his family will be a thought in whatever team he picks.
“I know that sometimes hopes and aspirations don’t turn out to be what reality is,” Schwarber told Coffey. “But it’s looking back at when I signed here in 2022, and seeing where you’re at now. The accumulation of work. The things that have made me better. You think about your kids. You sign here, and have your first kid, and then you have two, and your third one on the way. A lot of (those life events) have happened here.”
That doesn’t mean the Phillies will definitely re-sign him, but it sounds like Schwarber wants to be with the Phillies. Hopefully, the front office takes notice when the numbers come in. If not, a team like the Texas Rangers makes perfect sense.
