On Tuesday September 2, 2025, Worcester Red Sox insider Tommy Cassell reported former San Francisco Giants top pitching prospect Kyle Harrison is being called up by the Boston Red Sox

Harrison, 24, is expected to make his first career Red Sox start on Wednesday September 3, 2025 when the Red Sox take on the Cleveland Guardians at Fenway Park.

The Giants shipped Harrison off to Boston on June 15, 2015 in their trade for superstar DH/1B Rafael Devers, along with right-handed pitcher Jordan Hicks and two prospects.

Since the trade, Harrison has spent his entire Red Sox tenure with the AAA WooSox. In that time, he has pitched in 11 games (11 starts) and compiled a 4-2 record with a 3.65 ERA and 48 strikeouts in 49.1 innings.

Harrison Has Been Nursing An Injury

There is one potential obstacle to Kyle Harrison’s Red Sox debut tomorrow.

According to Cassell, Harrison has been nursing a left injury. It’s possible that Harrison receives an MRI when he arrives in Boston. If that MRI reveals any underlying issues, the Red Sox will not want to risk further injury to their young prospect and will start someone else instead.

But, Harrison has also pitched off the mound as recently as today, Tuesday September 2, 2025. So, it’s evident that the ankle injury isn’t bothering him too much.

That coupled with the Red Sox’ willingness to recall him in the first place suggests that he will make his start as scheduled tomorrow.

Red Sox Fans Are Really Hoping Harrison Pans Out

It’s no secret that Red Sox fans are disappointed, to say the least, with the return the Giants gave Boston in the Rafael Devers trade.

Jordan Hicks has been very poor in 20 appearances for Boston, pitching to a 6.38 ERA in 20 appearances. The flamethrower also only has 14 strikeouts in 18 innings pitched.

To make matters worse, Boston still owes Hicks $25 million over the next two seasons. That complicates the idea of just cutting him loose.

The other big headliner from the trade, prospect James Tibbs III, was already dealt away to the Los Angeles Dodgers in a deadline trade to bring Dustin May to Boston.

May has also been poor for Boston, with a 1-4 record in 5 starts and a 5.68 ERA. He’s given up 32 hits in only 25 innings.

Tibbs III hasn’t been stellar in AA since being traded to Los Angeles. But he’s been better than he was in the Boston organization and is still the Dodgers’ No. 8 prospect. At only 22 years old, he has plenty of time to develop into a Big League star.

Devers is, of course, making this all 10 times harder to endure by being the best hitter in baseball as of late.

He was just named National League Player of the Week after hitting .478 with 3 home runs and 10 RBI. His struggles in San Francisco appear to be over.

So Harrison’s debut will inevitably take place in that context. Can he develop into an ace and make the trade worth it for the Red Sox

Only time will tell.

But most Giants fans are rooting for Harrison too. Just because Harrison isn’t wearing the Orange and Black doesn’t mean his hometown fans aren’t hopeful for his success.

Unless he’s playing the Giants.
