San Francisco Giants Star Says Colorado Rockies Pitcher Had It Coming After Brawl

It seems like San Francisco Giants pitcher Logan Webb thinks someone should have fought Colorado Rockies pitcher Kyle Freeland sooner.

In the aftermath of a benches-clearing altercation between the Giants and Rockies on Tuesday September 2, 2025 that started when Freeland took issue with the pace at which Rafael Devers was rounding the bases following a two-run homer, Webb said he was surprised that Freeland hasn’t started any fights before.

“Surprised it hasn’t happened before with that guy,” Webb said. “Just kind of runs his mouth a lot of times. Raffy got him good, so, whatever.”

Webb and Freeland have been divisional rivals in Colorado and San Francisco for a long time. Webb has been with the Giants since 2019 while Freeland has been with the Rockies since 2017. So they have seen a lot of each other over the years.

If any opponent knows what Freeland is like to play against, it’s Webb.

What Freeland Said About The Situation

Kyle Freeland also shared his side of the story after the game. He said he felt intentionally slighted by Devers, who he felt was watching the home run for too long and taking too long to jog around the bases.

“I just found it extremely disrespectful to show me up in the first inning after hitting a home run, standing there watching it,” Freeland said. “Taking your sweet time getting to first base…I just found that extremely disrespectful and felt that I needed to let him know about that.”

Fans and insiders noted that Devers did not look at Freeland or do an overly exaggerated bat flip. In addition, Devers didn’t look at Freeland once until Freeland started yelling at him.

Many of them are speculating that Devers simply didn’t know if the ball was going to be fair or foul, which is why he stayed in the batter’s box. The way home plate umpire Phil Cuzzi watched the flight of the ball also suggests that he couldn’t tell if the ball was fair or foul initially.

It’s also possible that Freeland took special exception because he was having another frustrating start in what has ultimately been a very frustrating season. In 2025, Freeland is 3-14 with a 5.41 ERA. He had just given up a single and a home run to put his team in a 2-0 deficit to start the game.

And that all takes place in the context of a historically horrible Rockies season; they just lost their 100th game to fall to 39-100 on the year.

Webb Pitched A Good Game

While the opposing pitcher Freeland was thrown out of the game before he could record an out, Logan Webb stayed in and ultimately pitched another very solid game for San Francisco.

Webb threw 5 innings and surrendered 2 runs on 7 hits, walking two batters and striking out seven. Not his most efficient outing, but a very competitive one.

Meanwhile, the Giants offense hit three more home runs after Devers. Casey Schmitt, Wilmer Flores and Patrick Bailey all went yard.

Webb is in the midst of another incredible season for the Giants. He made his second straight All-Star appearance in July, and he’s leading the MLB in both starts and innings pitched again, all while sporting a stellar 3.17 ERA and striking out more batters than ever. He is only 6 strikeouts away from having his first season with 200+ Ks.

He’s helped the Giants’ recent resurgence as well. San Francisco has won nine of their last ten games and sit 5 games out of a playoff spot.

San Francisco looks to sweep the Rockies on Wednesday, with their other ace, Robbie Ray, on the mound.
