After making a run all the way to Game 7 of the World Series last season, the Toronto Blue Jays have had a rollercoaster MLB offseason.
To start things off, the reigning American League champions were able to make a huge free agency splash by signing star pitcher Dylan Cease to a seven-year, $210 million contract. They followed that move up by signing Japanese star Kazuma Okamoto to a four-year, $60 million deal.
While the two offseason additions were great moves for Toronto, the team did end up losing star shortstop Bo Bichette to the New York Mets in free agency.
In addition to the additions of Cease and Okamoto, the Blue Jays also signed relief pitcher Tyler Rogers to a three-year, $37 million deal and right-hander Cody Ponce to a three-year, $30 million contract. Both of those additions will strengthen the pitching staff.
At this point in the offseason, the rumors are starting to wind down. However, it’s possible that Toronto could still make another move. An intriguing trade has been suggested for the Blue Jays to consider.
Toronto Blue Jays Linked to Trade for Another Relief Pitcher
Zach Pressnell of St. Louis Cardinals on SI has suggested a trade between Toronto and the Cardinals that would send veteran reliever JoJo Romero to the Blue Jays.
“They’ve made slight upgrades this offseason, but they need to add another star to the roster,” Pressnell wrote. “There aren’t many options available right now who are better than Romero. The fact that Romero is also a southpaw increases his value.”
Romero would be an elite addition for Toronto. He would further solidify a bullpen that should already be one of Major League Baseball’s top-tier units.
During the 2025 MLB season with St. Louis, the 29-year-old left-hander appeared in 65 games. He compiled a 4-6 record to go along with a 2.07 ERA, a 1.25 WHIP, a 1.9 K/BB ratio, eight saves, 24 holds, and one blown save.
Throughout his six-year MLB career, Romero has played for just two teams. He began with the Philadelphia Phillies before making the move to the Cardinals back in 2022.
St. Louis may not be interested in trading Romero away. However, if the Cardinals are open to the idea, the Blue Jays could make a lot of sense as a potential destination.
What to Expect from the Blue Jays in 2026
Even without making more offseason moves, Toronto already looks the part of a potential World Series contender this coming season.
The Athletic’s Jim Bowden recently took a look at the offseason the Blue Jays were able to put together. He is a big fan of what the team has done.
When it came to the offseason grade for Toronto, Bowden gave the moves an “A” grade. He also predicted that the Blue Jays would end up winning the American League East once again.
Nothing can be set in stone before a season begins, but Toronto fans have a lot to be excited about. Even though the Blue Jays swung and missed on Kyle Tucker and lost Bichette, the immediate future looks very bright for the team.
