The 2025 NASCAR Xfinity Series regular season is coming down to a finale that feels straight out of a movie. On one side stands Connor Zilisch, a 19-year-old rookie who’s already turned the garage upside down.
On the other is Justin Allgaier, a 39-year-old veteran and the reigning champion. With the race at World Wide Technology Raceway, Zilisch holds a 20-point edge over Allgaier. At stake?
Connor Zilisch: The Rookie Sensation
According to NASCAR, “Connor Zilisch drives the No. 88 Chevrolet full-time for JR Motorsports in the NASCAR Xfinity Series. In his first career Xfinity start in September 2024, he won at Watkins Glen International. Zilisch collected his ninth career Xfinity Series victory at Portland International Raceway in August 2025.”
He’s also the driver who delivered JR Motorsports its milestone 100th team victory at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Signed to a multiyear deal with Trackhouse Racing in 2024, Zilisch is already confirmed to join the NASCAR Cup Series full-time in 2026.
Zilisch’s rookie season has been electric. With eight wins in 2025, including a dominant road-course display at Watkins Glen, plus 16 top-10s, his consistency is miles ahead of what’s expected from a first-year driver.
Justin Allgaier: The Veteran Face of the NASCAR Xfinity Series
On the other side of this clash is Justin Allgaier, one of the most reliable drivers in modern NASCAR Xfinity Series history. The defending 2024 champion continues to prove why he’s one of JR Motorsports’ cornerstones.
As NASCAR.com notes, “Justin Allgaier competes full-time in the NASCAR Xfinity Series for JR Motorsports, driving the No. 7 Chevrolet. After 14 full-time seasons, Allgaier won his first championship at Phoenix Raceway in 2024. He scored consecutive Xfinity Series wins in March 2025 at Las Vegas and Homestead, pushing his career win total to 27.”
His most recent triumph came at Nashville Superspeedway in May 2025. On top of that, he holds the record for most top-10 finishes in Xfinity Series history (292).
That said, the road hasn’t been flawless. A wreck at Texas and a failed pit strategy at Charlotte cost him valuable points, per Nick Degroot of Motorsport.com. Still, with his experience on ovals, particularly Phoenix, where the championship will be decided, Allgaier is perfectly positioned to strike back when it matters most.
Why This NASCAR Xfinity Series Showdown Matters
The NASCAR Xfinity Series showdown between Connor Zilisch and Justin Allgaier matters because it highlights a compelling rivalry between the young rising star Zilisch and the experienced veteran Allgaier.
Zilisch, despite suffering a broken collarbone during the season, has demonstrated an impressive performance with multiple wins, including a victorious race at Portland and a standout showing at Daytona, where a substitute driver finished the race for him.
Allgaier, the defending series champion, continues to push hard, maintaining a tight points battle with Zilisch and delivering strong finishes that keep the championship race intense.
Team owner Dale Earnhardt Jr has praised their battles. “That’s a really good point,” Earnhard said. “You know, it’s obviously great for Connor to have somebody like Justin around that’s running as well as he is, as well as the other competition, of course.”
“Connor’s being challenged at every turn. But it’s good for Justin to be tested, too, especially at that age. You need something to continue to challenge you, and it wasn’t an easy win. He had a little pressure there late.”
