Jesse Love left Talladega Superspeedway frustrated after a third-place finish in Saturday’s NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series Progress Group 250.
The Richard Childress Racing driver called it the most boring and annoying race he had ever run, but the result helped protect his championship lead with two races remaining.
Love started on the pole at Talladega for the fifth straight time, but a pit-road penalty forced him to battle back through the field. Long stretches of single-file racing also limited his chances to make a winning move.
Love finished behind Sammy Smith and Carson Kvapil after helping Smith make the winning pass on the final lap. The result kept Love ahead of Justin Allgaier in the standings as the series heads to Martinsville.
NASCAR Star Jesse Love Calls Talladega Race Boring
Love did not hide his frustration after the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series race at Talladega.
“That was the most boring, annoying race I’ve ever ran in my life.”
The race featured long stretches of single-file drafting, giving drivers few chances to move through the field. Carson Kvapil led 67 laps for JR Motorsports, while much of the field stayed in line for extended periods.
Love said he understood why teams chose to race that way, even though it made passing difficult.
“I don’t want to throw a rock at a glass house. We’ve made the race look like that in the past.”
Love acknowledged that drivers who control the draft have reasons to protect their position. He also praised JR Motorsports, along with entries from Hendrick Motorsports and Haas, for working together effectively.
“Especially the JRM cars did everything they needed to do. I’m surprised how well JRM has been able to execute that kind of stuff this year. Hats off to them, but it’s annoying to race against.”
NASCAR Talladega Race Forces Jesse Love to Change Strategy
Love entered Talladega with a 36-point championship lead after winning the previous weekend at Phoenix. However, a pit-road penalty for improper fueling forced him to restart from the rear and make an additional stop.
Despite the setback, Love regained track position and remained in contention. He eventually realized he needed to adjust his approach to the drafting race.
“While it was annoying, I was probably a little bit too stubborn to admit it in the beginning of the race.”
“And then after Stage 2, I was like ‘OK, I know what’s gonna work now and what’s not gonna work’ and I felt pretty confident there at the end.”
Love moved into the top lane and stayed there through the final stage. He knew winning would be difficult without help from other drivers or a major change in the pack.
“I knew that I wasn’t going to win the race, honestly, unless somebody crashed, or they got stuck side-by-side and I got a huge run and they didn’t block it,” he said.
“I knew I had no help, so I was just going to commit to whoever I liked the most, and push them to the win.”
Jesse Love Keeps NASCAR Championship Lead After Talladega
Love’s strategy helped Sammy Smith win in the No. 8 JR Motorsports Chevrolet. Smith passed teammate Carson Kvapil on the final lap to win by 0.084 seconds. Love finished third, just 0.131 seconds behind the winner.
Justin Allgaier secured fourth place, winning Stage 2 and earning valuable stage points. Corey Day placed sixth and remained 29 points behind Love in the championship standings.
Despite his frustration with the race, Love was pleased with the result and his role in Smith’s victory.
“It’s a phenomenal top-five. I’ve never been so happy to push someone to a win, I’ve never been so happy to not finish first, and I feel great about it,” Love said.
He added that he had to stop fighting the race’s drafting pattern and work with the leading group instead.
Love now heads to Martinsville with a 19-point lead over Allgaier and two races remaining. His team also lost pit selection for the next race after pre-race inspection issues. Although Talladega tested his patience, the third-place finish kept Love in control of the championship battle as the season approaches its conclusion.
