Boston Celtics star Derrick White has emerged as one of the NBA’s most talked-about trade candidates this offseason. With Houston’s Fred VanVleet sidelined for the season due to an ACL injury, analysts have floated White as a potential target, raising questions about Boston’s long-term strategy.
The Ringer’s Bill Simmons called White the “dramatic name” during the recent episode of The Bill Simmons Podcast, noting the guard’s value and the high cost any team would need to pay to acquire him.
“You’re giving me real assets for that,” Simmons said. “But if you’re Houston and you basically turn this VanVleet situation into Derrick White with some of your picks and make a real run this year, could you actually win the title with Derrick White? I think that’s a real question.”
White’s Long-Term Role in Boston
Despite trade speculation, White remains a key figure in Boston’s plans, especially with Jayson Tatum (Achilles) out for the season. The Ringer’s Zach Lowe noted that White’s contract provides stability, with four years remaining and a player option in the fourth year.
“You get four years of runway now—that takes him through age 35,” Lowe said if the Rockets trade for White. “He’s got four years left on his contract with a player option in the fourth year. Ime Udoka knows him already.”
White’s performance last season reinforced his importance to the Celtics. He averaged 16.4 points, 4.8 assists, 4.5 rebounds, 1.1 blocks and nearly a steal per game while shooting 38.4% from three-point range. With Tatum recovering from an Achilles injury, White’s role is expected to expand further.
Celtics’ Trade Threshold
Although White has generated significant interest, Boston has set a high bar for any potential trade. According to NBA insider Jake Fischer, the Celtics are unlikely to move White unless they receive a package comparable to the deal New York gave up for Mikal Bridges, which included five first-round picks.
Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints reported in July that multiple teams offered substantial assets for White, including two first-round picks and a swap, but Boston rejected those offers.
In the hypothetical trade discussions between Boston and Houston, Lowe set a price tag for the versatile guard.
“For Boston, it’s like three first-round picks plus a young player,” Lowe said. “They would demand a lot for him, justifiably.”
Front Office Pushes Back on Rumors
Celtics vice president of basketball operations Mike Zarren directly addressed the trade speculation involving White or Jaylen Brown, Boston’s top players outside of Tatum.
“Those two guys are really, really great NBA players, and there hasn’t been anything close to serious about trading them,” Zarren told reporters after the second round of the 2025 NBA Draft. “I’m not sure where all this reporting came from, but those guys are key parts of our team, and we’re lucky to have them here.”
Balancing Team Goals and Star Expectations
Any trade involving White could create challenges for the Celtics’ top stars. Simmons and Lowe agreed that Tatum, who is recovering from injury and aiming to return to form, might view a trade as a difficult message.
“It’s a tough phone call to Tatum,” Simmons said. “I heard the rehab’s going great for him and for Jaylen, too. ‘We’ve traded Derrick White—it’s a bunch of assets that won’t help you guys until about three years from now.’”
Lowe added perspective: “On the other hand, Tatum has won an NBA title, several first-team All-NBA appearances, and is slated to make $71.5 million in 2029-30. So I would hope that he would see the bigger picture.”
White’s Contract Security
White is entering the second year of a four-year, $126 million extension that begins next season. Acquired in 2022 from the San Antonio Spurs in a deal for Josh Richardson, Romeo Langford, and a first-round pick that became Blake Wesley, White was a key cog of Boston’s championship run in 2024.
As the Celtics evaluate their roster and cap situation following Tatum’s injury, White remains both a cornerstone of the team’s present plans and a potential lever for future moves, making him one of the league’s most intriguing players in trade discussions.
