The Detroit Pistons have a new name on their injury report before a pivotal Game 5 against the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Duncan Robinson is listed as questionable for Wednesday’s matchup with lower back soreness, according to the NBA’s official injury report released Tuesday. The Pistons also listed Kevin Huerter as questionable with a left adductor strain and Caris LeVert as questionable with a right heel contusion.
That makes Robinson the notable new development for Detroit as the series returns to Little Caesars Arena tied 2-2. He is not the biggest name in the series, but he is the kind of shooter whose availability can matter in a playoff game where spacing, bench production and late-game half-court offense are all magnified.
The Detroit Pistons Added Duncan Robinson to Their Injury Report With Lower Back Soreness
Robinson’s status is worth watching because the Pistons are already trying to stabilize their offense after Cleveland’s Game 4 surge.
The NBA injury report lists Robinson as questionable due to “Low Back; Soreness.” The designation does not mean Robinson is out, but it puts his Game 5 availability in doubt until Detroit provides another update or announces its available players closer to tipoff.
For Detroit, the concern is not just whether Robinson plays. It is whether he can move well enough to be the same type of floor-spacing threat. Robinson’s value is tied to movement, quick releases and the defensive attention he draws away from the ball. Even if he is not carrying the offense, Cleveland has to account for him when he is healthy enough to sprint off screens or punish help defense.
That kind of spacing matters around Cade Cunningham, especially after Cleveland’s defense tightened in the second half of Game 4. If Robinson is limited or unavailable, Detroit may have to lean more heavily on other perimeter options and put even more pressure on Cunningham, Tobias Harris and the bench to create clean looks.
Pistons Also Dealing With Injuries to Kevin Huerter and Caris LeVert
Robinson is not the only Pistons player carrying a questionable tag.
Huerter remains questionable with a left adductor strain, while LeVert is questionable with a right heel contusion. Both injuries were also part of Detroit’s Game 4 concern, when Huerter and LeVert were listed as questionable before the matchup in Cleveland.
LeVert’s status is especially important because he gave Detroit real production in Game 4. LeVert had a huge game in his last outing with a team-high 24 points in the Pistons’ 112-103 loss, while Cunningham added 19 points.
That matters because Detroit cannot afford to lose reliable shot creation while the series is shifting into a best-of-three. LeVert gives the Pistons another ballhandler and scorer who can work when the first action breaks down. If he is limited by the heel issue, Detroit’s offensive burden becomes more concentrated.
Huerter’s situation is different but still relevant. His perimeter shooting and size on the wing can help Detroit keep Cleveland’s defense honest. With Robinson now also questionable, the Pistons’ depth of shooting is the part of the injury report that stands out most.
Pistons-Cavaliers Is Now Tied 2-2 After Huge Performances From Donovan Mitchell and James Harden
The injury report comes after Cleveland pulled the series even with a 112-103 win in Game 4.
Donovan Mitchell delivered the headline performance, finishing with 43 points and scoring 39 in the second half. NBA.com noted that Mitchell tied Eric “Sleepy” Floyd for the most points in a half in NBA playoff history.
James Harden also helped Cleveland steady the series, finishing with 24 points and 11 assists. The Cavaliers’ win tied the Eastern Conference semifinal series at 2-2 and sent it back to Detroit with momentum suddenly less comfortable for the Pistons.
That is why Detroit’s injury report has more weight than a routine availability update. The Pistons had a chance to put Cleveland in a 3-1 hole, but instead watched Mitchell take over after halftime. Now they need a response at home, and the availability of Robinson, LeVert and Huerter could shape how much offensive flexibility head coach J.B. Bickerstaff has in Game 5.
Detroit does not necessarily need all three to carry a major scoring load. It does need enough healthy shooting and creation around Cunningham to prevent Cleveland from loading up too aggressively.
Pistons-Cavaliers Game 5 Is on Wednesday
Game 5 between the Pistons and Cavaliers is scheduled for Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN.
The stakes are straightforward. The winner moves within one victory of the Eastern Conference Finals. The loser faces elimination in Game 6.
For the Pistons, Robinson’s late addition to the injury report is not the biggest storyline in the series, but it is a meaningful one. In a tied playoff matchup, losing even one trusted shooter can change spacing, rotations and late-game lineup choices.
Detroit’s next update will determine whether Robinson’s lower-back soreness is a minor note or a real Game 5 complication.
