Golden State Warriors fans hoping that Steve Kerr will continue on as the team’s head coach won’t be happy to hear what Draymond Green had to say about the situation.
Kerr’s contract with the Warriors is up, and during a new episode of his podcast, Green cast some serious doubt on the coach’s future in Golden State.
Draymond Green Doesn’t Think Steve Kerr Will be Back With Warriors
Green indicated he thinks that the hug he, Kerr and Steph Curry shared after the Warriors were eliminated from playoff contention by the Phoenix Suns in the NBA Play-In Tournament represented the end of an era.
“Steph, myself, Steve shared a moment in what could be our last time playing with Steve as our coach. I’m happy we got to share that moment. He didn’t miss the moment. It was a big deal,” Green said. “I hope he’s our coach next year. You want my opinion, I think not just because it just feels like that. It felt like that was it.”
In addition to Kerr, Green also expressed uncertainty about his own future with the only franchise that he has ever played for in his career. Green has a player option for the 2026-27 season that he’s expected to turn down in favor of a new contract that he hopes will come from the Warriors.
“I’ve never been so uncertain since early in my career on what happens next, but I’m truly at a loss now because you just don’t know what direction will be what,” Green said. “… I also hope I’m on this team next year. We also don’t know that. And man, if it was, what a run it’s been. So lucky to have 12 years with Steve as my coach. We shall see. I don’t know. Just got to stay ready for whatever it is and roll with the punches.”
Steph Curry Could Have Major Impact on Steve Kerr’s Future in Golden State
Steph Curry’s presence on the roster in Golden State can’t be overlooked when it comes to discussions regarding the future of Kerr. Curry’s voice still carries a whole lot of weight in Golden State, and he has previously stated that he hopes to never play for another coach.
“I don’t want to,” Curry said. “We deserve that, I feel. Things change in this league. We can only control so much. But I think we’re in a very unique situation that we deserve the opportunity [to ride it out].”
Similarly, Kerr has previously vowed never to walk away from Curry as long as he’s afforded the opportunity to coach him.
“I will never leave Steph Curry,” Kerr said. “… He is one of the finest human beings I’ve ever been around in my life. And just to come to work every day and see Steph has made this job everything.”
Obviously, things can change quickly in the NBA, but Curry and Kerr have formed an extremely strong bond, and that will likely play into the decision-making when it comes to Kerr’s future in the Bay Area.
