Bronny James is spending part of his August exactly where the Los Angeles Lakers expected their players to be: alongside Luka Dončić in Slovenia.

James posted two Instagram Stories from Slovenia on August 21 as Dončić hosted Lakers teammates in his home country for a four-day offseason gathering. Bronny was also pictured with Dončić, Austin Reaves and other Lakers during the trip on Dončić’s IG.

That does not make James immune from a trade. NBA business can change quickly, and a player being overseas certainly does not prevent a front office from completing a deal.

But amid weeks of speculation about James’ future following his father’s departure from Los Angeles, his presence at one of the Lakers’ most significant team-building events of the offseason offers another reason to pump the brakes on the idea that a Bronny trade is imminent.

Bronny James Is Taking Part in Luka Doncic’s Lakers Reset

Dončić invited the Lakers to Slovenia for an offseason gathering running from August 20 through August 24.

The event was conceived as more than a vacation. Reports ahead of the trip described plans for workouts, golf, sightseeing and team-building activities as Dončić attempts to establish chemistry with a reshaped Lakers roster entering his first season as Los Angeles’ unquestioned centerpiece.

Bronny being there matters in that context.

If the Lakers viewed James strictly as an expendable contract awaiting his next destination, his participation would not be impossible. But there is a difference between being technically available in trade talks and being treated as part of the group Dončić is bringing together before training camp.

Right now, the Lakers’ actions continue to point more toward the latter.

Los Angeles allowed James’ $2.3 million salary for 2026-27 to become fully guaranteed at the end of June.

Then came a stronger indication after LeBron James ultimately left the Lakers.

ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne reported in July that Rich Paul, who represents both LeBron and Bronny, said the two were “not a package deal.” Shelburne added there was no current plan or request for Bronny to join his father.

That never completely eliminated the possibility of a trade. It did, however, undermine the assumption that Bronny would automatically leave Los Angeles once LeBron did.

The Slovenia trip now provides another piece of evidence.

Lakers Have Given Little Indication They Want Bronny Gone

Bronny’s name has continued to appear in hypothetical trade packages during the offseason.

Heavy recently covered proposals that would include James in trades as Los Angeles continues examining ways to reshape its roster. Those scenarios are worth discussing because the Lakers still have roster decisions to make, but a proposed trade is different from evidence that the organization is actively shopping him.

California Post Lakers reporter Khobi Price offered additional context in July, saying during an appearance on 97.1 The Fan that it would take “something real” for the Lakers to trade James.

That distinction remains important.

Bronny is not untouchable. Few young reserve players are.

But there is currently a sizable gap between could be included in a trade and appears headed out of Los Angeles.

For at least this weekend, James is not behaving like a player detached from the Lakers’ plans. He is overseas with Dončić and his teammates taking part in an event designed specifically to build the foundation for the season ahead.

The Lakers could always receive an offer that changes the equation.

Until that happens, Bronny’s trip to Slovenia is the latest indication that Los Angeles is still treating him like part of its future, not someone already halfway out the door.
