The Los Angeles Lakers have been making changes across the board to their roster this offseason, and they may not be done just yet. Rumors continue to link the Lakers to a handful of targets, with Dallas Mavericks sharpshooter Klay Thompson being one of the most popular candidates to find his way to Los Angeles before the start of the 2026-27 campaign.

Thompson has ties to the L.A. area, as it is where he grew up while watching his father, Mychal Thompson, play for the Lakers in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Like everyone else, Mychal has heard the rumors linking his son to Los Angeles, and he made his thoughts very clear on the situation with a two-word message on social media.

Mychal Thompson Addresses Klay Thompson, Lakers Rumors

While Klay is obviously well known amongst basketball fans, many folks forget that Mychal enjoyed a long career in the pros himself. The No. 1 overall pick in the 1978 NBA Draft, Mychal spent the first eight years of his career with the Portland Trail Blazers. After a brief stint with the San Antonio Spurs, Thompson latched on with the Lakers, which is where he spent the final four-and-a-half years of his career, winning back-to-back championships in 1987 and 1988.

Klay has managed to one-up his dad, winning four titles and earning five All-Star selections so far in his career. He played a vital role in helping the Golden State Warriors become the most recent dynasty in the history of the league, and while he has battled injuries in recent years, he is still one of the most lethal three-point shooters in the league.

The Mavs are reportedly open to trading Thompson this offseason, with the Lakers and Miami Heat showing interest in acquiring him. A return to Los Angeles would certainly hit home for the entire Thompson family, with Mychal even going as far as to suggest he is doing what he can to get his son to find his way to L.A.

“I’m TRYING…😡,” Mychal said in response to a post on X discussing the rumors linking Klay to the Lakers.

Should the Lakers Make a Move for Klay Thompson?

Even with all their moves this offseason, the Lakers could still use an influx of shooting on their roster. Again, Thompson isn’t necessarily the player he once was, but he still is a skilled scorer from behind the arc. Last season, Thompson averaged only 11.7 points per game, and while he hit just 39.3% of his shots, he still knocked down 38.3% of his threes, which is a very good figure.

Thompson already has experience (albeit a very limited amount) when it comes to playing alongside superstar guard Luka Doncic, so he could be a logical fit to join a strong Lakers team. His dad clearly is pulling for him to find his way to Los Angeles, and if the price is right, the front office could reach out to Dallas and try to get a deal done in the near future.
