LeBron James will enter his 23rd NBA season this fall facing uncertainty about his future with the Los Angeles Lakers. With no contract extension in place, James, who will turn 41 in December, will play on an expiring deal after opting into his $52.6 million player option.
Lakers president Rob Pelinka emphasized that the team would have offered James an extension if he had sought one.
“I’ve said before, we would love it if LeBron’s story would be to retire as a Laker. That’d be a positive story,” Pelinka told reporters Thursday following the announcement of JJ Redick’s contract extension as head coach.
Pelinka added that the Lakers carefully structured their offseason moves, including the re-signing of Luka Dončić, to ensure James has a competitive roster around him.
“Once LeBron opted in, we made sure that they had the necessary pieces around them to be on a really competitive, strong team,” Pelinka said. “We built into that, and for the future, obviously, first things first would be for him to make the decisions he wants in terms of how long he wants to play. We’re going to continue to honor and respect that.”
Year-to-Year Decision on Retirement
James has largely stayed silent on his long-term plans, leaving speculation about how many seasons he will continue. ESPN’s Brian Windhorst reported that James’ retirement decision is being made on a year-to-year basis.
“Based on my conversations, I honestly think they don’t know,” Windhorst said recently on the Hoop Collective podcast. “As far as I know, he’s honestly going year to year.”
An NBA executive speaking to Lakers Daily suggested James may be setting the stage for one final dream while keeping open the possibility of joining his youngest son in the NBA.
“I think LeBron plays one or two more seasons unless the Lakers win it all next year,” the executive said. “Bryce [James] will be eligible for the 2026 draft. There are some whispers that LeBron wants to play with him, too. We’ll see what happens, but I just can’t see LeBron retiring after next season. He’s still too good a player to just walk away.”
Family Legacy and Bryce James’ Potential Impact
Bryce James, LeBron’s youngest son, is set to begin his freshman season at Arizona this fall. At 6-foot-6, Bryce is a highly regarded prospect, and if he excels, he could declare for the 2026 NBA Draft. LeBron’s plans may ultimately hinge on Bryce’s draft trajectory, potentially creating a rare opportunity for another father-son NBA pairing.
LeBron already made history last season when Bronny James debuted alongside him, making them the first father-son duo to appear in an NBA game on the same team. A potential pairing with Bryce could extend LeBron’s legacy further and add another unique chapter to NBA history.
Lakers Focused on Championship Pursuit
While contract questions and family considerations loom, James remains focused on competing. The Lakers have added pieces — former No. 1 pick Deandre Ayton as the starting center, defensive stalwart Marcus Smart and young 3-and-D wing Jake LaRavia intended to maximize their championship window.
“This summer, we were very intentional in terms of the pieces we added with Luka and LeBron,” Pelinka said. “We have a process. We were methodical in what we wanted to accomplish in the offseason. Now, we’re about to dive into the process of having this team come together … the process of making this team great.”
James, meanwhile, has not publicly addressed his unique situation with the media throughout the summer. He is expected to do so at Lakers media day next week, where questions about his future, contract status, and potential to play with Bryce will be front and center.
LeBron’s Future Remains Uncertain
As the NBA’s all-time leading scorer prepares for the 2025-26 season, questions about James’ career trajectory and how long he will continue to play remain unanswered. Whether he retires after this season, extends for one or two more years, or waits to potentially play alongside Bryce, James’ 23rd season promises to be one of the most intriguing chapters in his storied career. The outcome will likely hinge on both his health and the competitive opportunities the Lakers can provide in what could be the twilight of his legendary run.
