LeBron James is the de facto leader for the Los Angeles Lakers in their playoff series against the Houston Rockets while the team remains without Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves.

James is the oldest player in the NBA. Though he isn’t the same-caliber player he was a few years ago, he continues to be one of the more impactful stars in the league, especially in the playoffs, as evidenced by his Game 1 performance against Houston in the win.

Now, heading into Game 2, James is tasked once again with leading the Lakers. The series is expected to stay tightly contested, especially amid Kevin Durant‘s uncertain injury status, but based on his postseason history, James has the advantage heading into the second game of the first round.

Wild LeBron James Stat Points To Good News For Lakers Before Game 2 Vs Rockets

In a screen grab shared by the X account Oh No He Didn’t, taken from a recent television broadcast, James’ incredible history after going up 1-0 in a playoff series points to the Lakers having the early advantage against the Rockets.

James is 29-2 in the postseason when winning Game 1, and even more, he is a staggering 32-0 when going up 2-0 in a playoff series.

James is already the NBA playoffs leader in several major statistical categories, and his record after taking an early series lead stands out as well.

Additionally, James’ teams are an impeccable 13-0 in first round series when winning Game 1.

While there were questions about how James would lead the Lakers without their two stars in Doncic and Reaves, he put together a 19-point, eight-rebound, 13-assist performance in the opening game of the series, with some help from Luke Kennard, Deandre Ayton, and the rest of the rotation.

But still, James has a 12-11 record when losing Game 1’s of a series, so taking the early series lead over the Rockets is big for Los Angeles. As mentioned, James is undefeated when going up 2-0 in a series, so if winning Game 2 wasn’t already important for the Lakers, it could decide the series.

James will continue playing without his two main running mates in Doncic and Reaves for the time being, as the Lakers have yet to re-evaluate the two and announce and injury updates or return dates for either.

While it wasn’t strictly James who propelled the Lakers to their Game 1 win over Houston, he played a major role, finishing with a near triple-double in his record-tying 19th NBA postseason debut.

“For me, I got to do a little bit of everything,” James said postgame, per ESPN. “It’s what the job requires. So being a triple threat, being able to rebound, being able to pass, being able to shoot and also defend and put myself in position where I can bring value to this ballclub, bring value to this team throughout this series.”

Though the Lakers have been seen as Doncic’s team over the course of the season, he remains out with the hamstring strain. Still, now with more playoff games under his belt than anyone in league history, James retook his leadership role for Los Angeles to begin the series.

“He displayed great leadership throughout,” head coach JJ Redick said of the 41-year-old. “We talked all week about being connected offensively and trusting the pass. He led us there in the first half, getting 10 assists, and then was able to make some scoring plays down the stretch.”

It was a strong performance from James in Game 1 over the weekend, but he still holds the burden of leading the Lakers for potentially the rest of the series. Durant’s status will be crucial for Game 2, but for now, Los Angeles is in the driver’s seat, and if history says anything about James in the playoffs, going up 2-0 could be the final blow on the series.
