JJ Redick gestures toward Luka Doncic during a game for the Los Angeles Lakers prior to the injury sequence that drew scrutiny around the team’s decision-making.

By Sunday, JJ Redick wasn’t just providing an update on Luka Doncic — he was answering for a decision that had already come under scrutiny.

Speaking ahead of the Los Angeles Lakers’ matchup against the Dallas Mavericks, Redick addressed his star guard’s condition just two days after Doncic suffered a left hamstring injury against the Oklahoma City Thunder — a sequence that quickly became a focal point across the league.

“I just know that he’s gonna do everything he can to try to be back,” Redick said Sunday, via The Athletic. “I talked to him Friday. I talked to him again yesterday. I talked to him again this morning. He’s going to go through all the necessary things to be back at some point, and it’s our job again to extend the season so both those guys can get back.”

Luka Doncic’s Injury Sequence Raises Questions

The way the injury unfolded is central to the debate.

Doncic appeared to grab at his left hamstring late in the first half against Oklahoma City and received treatment at halftime. Despite that, he returned to start the third quarter before exiting with 7:39 remaining after aggravating the injury.

Redick said the decision to allow Doncic to continue was based on clearance from the Lakers’ medical staff.

“We checked him out. He got work done. He was cleared,” Redick said. “Again, we’re not going to put a player at risk. Those things happen.”

Still, the game context amplified the reaction. Oklahoma City led by more than 30 points at halftime, leaving little realistic path for a comeback.

The decision drew criticism, including from California Post’s Melissa Rohlin, who questioned whether a more cautious approach should have been taken, given both the visible discomfort and the score.

Lakers Coach Points to Medical Data

By Sunday, Redick leaned into the process behind that decision, emphasizing that no measurable warning signs were pointing to overuse.

“As a coach, you go on the information you have,” Redick said. “He was medically cleared.”

The Lakers rely heavily on performance tracking — including acceleration, workload and movement trends — to monitor players throughout the season.

“We also rely on the tracking data, and we’re looking at that after every game,” Redick said. “Acceleration, jumps, workload, all of those things.”

According to Redick, nothing in that data suggested elevated risk.

“There was nothing leading into that game that would suggest either those guys were ‘running hot,’ as we call it.”

Lakers Feel Immediate Impact

The consequences showed up quickly.

Without Doncic and Austin Reaves, the Lakers dropped their first game without both players, falling 134-128 to Dallas.

Los Angeles struggled to generate consistent offense late, underscoring how much of the team’s creation flows through Doncic.

The loss tightened an already crowded Western Conference race with only a handful of games remaining.

Luka Doncic Pursues Accelerated Recovery

In the days following the injury, the focus shifted to recovery — and urgency.

According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, Doncic will travel to Europe for specialized treatment on his Grade II left hamstring strain in an effort to speed up his return.

“After consultation with Lakers doctors and his own medical team, Luka Doncic will seek specialized medical treatment in Europe on his Grade 2 left hamstring in an attempt to expedite his return to play,” his agent, Bill Duffy of WME Basketball, said.

The move reflects both the seriousness of the injury and the stakes facing the Lakers as the postseason approaches.

A Narrow Margin Moving Forward

Redick’s pregame comments now land differently.

There were no obvious warning signs. No data pointing to overuse. Only a decision made in real time, backed by medical clearance and competitive intent.

But in hindsight, the margin looks thinner.

“It’s our job again to extend the season,” Redick said.

That task is now far more urgent.

Because the Lakers are trying to do exactly what Redick outlined — stay afloat long enough for Doncic to return.

In a season defined by narrow margins, this is one they can’t afford to miss.
