One of the free agents added by the Los Angeles Lakers this offseason is Matisse Thybulle.

The defensive specialist signed a one-year, $2.45 million contract. He brings relentless defense on the wings and 3-point shooting. He’s a two-time All-Defensive Second Team and a career 34.9% shooter from beyond the arc.

However, Thybulle spent the last two seasons battling injuries. He has only played 45 games in that span, though he shot 41.8% from 3-point range.

Speaking on the Los Angeles Lakers’ YouTube channel, Matisse Thybulle introduced himself to the fanbase. Thybulle shared an honest message on what it means to him to wear the legendary purple and gold jersey.

“I think it’s a special opportunity to play for such a historic franchise, an accomplished franchise,” Thybulle said. “To contribute in an arena and wearing a jersey that so many great players have worn is something I’m really excited about.”

Thybulle will wear the No. 26 jersey for the Lakers next season. He also explained the reason for choosing the number.

“I chose 26 because my two numbers I’ve worn in the NBA are 22 (in Philly) and four (in Portland), adds up to 26,” Thybulle said. “So, yeah, I chose this number because I just feel like it’s a new chapter, a fresh start, but still knowing what got me here. There’s a number I’ve never worn, a color I’ve never worn, a whole lot of newness.”

Thybulle began his career with the Philadelphia 76ers in 2019 as the 20th overall pick out of Washington. He was traded to the Portland Trail Blazers midway through the 2022-23 season as part of a four-team deal with the Charlotte Hornets and New York Knicks.

Lakers This Offseason

The Los Angeles Lakers are one of the busiest teams this offseason. The front office, led by Rob Pelinka, made a bunch of moves to surround Luka Doncic with the right talent. They also moved on from LeBron James, who left in free agency to sign with the Philadelphia 76ers.

The Lakers re-signed Austin Reaves to a massive four-year, $180 million contract. They acquired Walker Kessler from the Utah Jazz in a sign-and-trade, giving the center a four-year, $130 million extension.

In free agency, the Lakers added Quentin Grimes, Collin Sexton, Sandro Mamukelashvili, Kevon Looney, Matisse Thybulle and Ziaire Williams. They have also been linked to Jonathan Kuminga, who is among the remaining top free agents on the market.

As for trades, the Lakers traded Deandre Ayton to the Washington Wizards in exchange for Jaden Hardy and two future second-round picks.

The Lakers also seemingly got a steal in the draft, acquiring Cameron Carr in a draft-day deal with the New York Knicks.
